Repeating task with repeating dependencies

Fair enough. My problem is that every month our team has to reset the dependencies on many recurring tasks. Would love advice on ways to prevent this time from being spent each month.

Marshall Burridge,

Can you have a template containing everything and someone or something create a project from that template every month? So the recurrence is on the ā€œbundle/templateā€ rather than on each task?

That might work. When you say ā€œsomethingā€ create a project, is there a way to automate the creation of a project from a template each month?

Flowsana does it, cc @Phil_Seeman . Human are also quite good at clicking once a month :grimacing:

Looks to me like this behavior has changed:

The new repeated subtask blocks the new repeated parent task.

Unfortunately, the due date on the subtask does not repeat relative to the parent taskā€™s new due date. Can anyone confirm why this would be intended?

Subtasks date and parent task date have always been unrelated. Same for the completion status (complete all subtasks does not complete parent task and vice versa)

But does that make sense in this scenario (repeating dependencies)?

Iā€™m going to try this right now (creating a template with the dependencies saved, and then using the template once each month to create a new set of tasks with dependencies already set). Hopefully Iā€™ll remember to come back and report how itā€™s been. I think itā€™ll work, at least for my needs.

Hi Aaron! Has this worked for you? Trying to set up this same type of workflow now!

I want an overall task with subtasks set as dependencies to repeat when I save as a template.

For example:

Overall Task - Due Day 30
Subtask 1 - Due Day 5
Subtask 2 - Due 2 days later
Subtask 3 - Due 10 days later
Subtask 4 - Due 28 days later

Is it possible to set this up as a template?

Robert,

It hasnā€™t worked as well as Iā€™d liked. Bottom line is, yes, saving dependencies into a project template has worked in creating ā€œrepeatedā€ tasks with dependencies.

Here are a few challenges Iā€™ve come across:

  1. The Project Template canā€™t have the tasks assigned, or else my employees see the tasks on their lists. As a result, I have to assign each of the tasks after creating a project from the template.
  2. Iā€™ve assigned a task to an employee, but the subtasks arenā€™t assigned to anyone, because Iā€™ve assumed that the employee over the parent task would be able to check off the subtasks. Turns out thatā€™s not the case; the employee over the parent task canā€™t check off the subtasks since they arenā€™t assigned to them. And since I created a dependency so that the parent task canā€™t be completed until the subtasks are checked off (I did it this way in an effort to promote proper work flow), the employee is unable to check off the parent task until they override the dependency.

Overall, I upgraded to the Premium primarily in order to use two features: (1) start dates and (2) dependencies. Iā€™ve been disappointed with both.

Relating to your task though, I think that should work fine as long as you as the admin are the person checking off all tasks, or as long as you assign every subtask to somebody. Iā€™d recommend you use the task template feature.

I COMPLETELY agree. None of the workarounds are ideal and prevents what Asana is all about, good workflow.

My firm has been using asana for several years, but we have never been able to get dependencies to work on recurring tasks. I donā€™t know if this is something Iā€™m doing wrong with the task setup or if itā€™s simply not an option.

We have projects that repeat every month, and the steps must be done in order. Setting up recurring tasks is simple enough. But when the dependencies are added, all of the dependent tasks end up permanently blocked. For example:

  • Project contains 1 section with tasks 1, 2, and 3
  • tasks have an assignee, due date, and are set to repeat either periodically or custom
  • task 2 is blocked by task 1, and task 3 is blocked by task 2
  • task 1 is completed and checked off
  • task 2 is available for about 5 seconds, but when task 1 reappears (since it is recurring), task 2 becomes blocked again
  • task 2 now has two dependencies, task 1 (completed) and task 1 (incomplete), so it cannot be checked off

Hey @anon69926648
welcome to the Asana Community Forum

I have found an existing feedback request and was wondering if this is the scenario you are facing as well? Repeating task with repeating dependencies

And here is a video as well explaining how dependencies function with recurring tasks:

Or another option would be creating a task template that you always use: How to use task templates in Asana. ā€¢ Asana Product Guide

yep, unfortunately thatā€™s the issue. Itā€™s a shame that feedback request is 4 years old and itā€™s never been addressed. Thanks for your help!

Asana is always watching the feedback users share here as well. Iā€˜d like to refer to Emilyā€˜s message:

Agreed with @Andrea_Mayer hereā€”Asana does listen, but how they prioritize what to work on is more of a black box. As a customer, this is often frustrating, and why alternatives like ClickUp (who have a public roadmap and have already implemented most feature requests weā€™ve had here in the Asana forums) are looking more and more attractive to folks.

Itā€™s now 2022 and Iā€™m looking for this exact same feature!

We are the exact same! Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon.

One of the biggest advantages of software like this is to automate things that repeat. Very surprised that there is still no way to create recurring tasks with dependenciesā€¦(without the parent task continually blocking the child task - which is what happens to us, causing havoc everywhereā€¦)

Been about a year since this comment and this is exactly what needs to be fixed.

Task 2 is dependent on Task 1.
Task 1 is completed and reoccurs at itā€™s next interval.
Task 2 is now dependent on the new Task 1.

Seems like a simple feature. Like something that says Task 2 is only dependent on Task 1 if Task 1 due date is before Task 2.
