Mark a task as "Cancelled" instead of "Complete"

@Claire_Franklin adding another +1 here!

I imagine it presenting almost the same way a “Rejected” Approval task does where there’s an ‘X’ instead of a checkmark that looks like it’s complete.

@Claire_Franklin,

I’m not discounting your request here, but am curious if, unless/until it’s ever implemented, there’s a reason you can’t use the solution I mentioned above of using a custom task type?

@Phil_Seeman My ask is surrounding a Cancelled Project Status, so the recommendation above would not work for this particular ask.

BUT I would love to see that functionality carried to the Project Status options if at all possible too! I believe @cosmo was asking for the same with a “Not Started” Project Status option here too: Mark a task as "Cancelled" instead of "Complete" - #59 by cosmo

Oh, sorry, @Claire_Franklin, I just reacted to the title of this topic “Mark a task…” Now reading the thread I see the confusing mess of discussion between task and project asks. I’m going to see if I can clean it up between this current thread for tasks and this other one for projects.

EDIT:
FYI I moved all of the posts that were in this thread but were discussing project status into this other thread: Add a 'Not started' project status

Can you unmerge? This feels more confusing with everything clumped together.

@cosmo,

It was more confusing before because there were discussions of task-based status and project-based status all in this one thread. I split out the project ones into the other thread and left the task ones here.

I did think of splitting the project-based discussions into two separate topics, one for a “not started” option and one for a “cancelled” option, but it feels like those would really be part of the same enhancement. Maybe that topic should be something like “Add custom project status types like we have now for tasks”? Although one could also argue that the project status discussion is really like this other topic: Customization of Update Status options / Icons. What do you think?

In case it wasn’t known to anyone reading, custom task types work with emoji as the first character of the task type name:

@Phil_Seeman, I understand now—apologies for the confusion. It makes sense to split out the discussions between Project & Task statuses. I was just thrown off when that split-out topic on Project statuses was also merged with other existing threads on the same topic.

Makes sense now, thank you!

@lpb & other readers—just note that even if you use these emojis & colors to help visually distinguish, you’ll notice that all custom task type statuses map back to a built-in Asana task completion status of either “Incomplete” or “Complete” (see far right of screenshot above).

This leads to a situation where choosing a status like " :cross_mark: Rejected" with a red background appears in list view next to the task name and in the task details view at the top, BUT—because the custom task type status maps back to “Complete”—in the task’s activity log you see this:

…whereas a rejected approval appears like this in the activity log:

Great point, @cosmo. It would be wonderful if you could create a English Forum > Product Feedback topic asking Asana to address this so we can all vote, and link these two topics. I agree Asana should do a better job with that completion message, as you point out, similar to what they do with Approvals, or downplay the completion aspect more and focus on the custom stage if too hard because of the configurability.
