Personal Projects Being Discontinued

If Personal Projects is being discontinued, and I want to be able to easily switch back and forth between personal and work tasks, will that work by creating a new account, or will I continually have to log out of one and into the other, and back and forth? How about on the app (I use Windows desktop and an Android phone) - will I still get notifications for both accounts or only the one I’m currently signed in to? Keep in mind that I don’t want ANY of my personal tasks to be visible or accessible in any way to my work partners (I mean, it’s PERSONAL!)

I created my Asana account YEARS ago so that I, along with a handful of coworkers, could better manage our department’s project tasks. I liked it so much that I took advantage of the “Personal Projects” space, so that I could flip back and forth between my work tasks (part of my university’s domain) and my personal tasks (that weren’t work-related and that I didn’t want to be mixed in with my work tasks or to-do list or to be visible to anyone but me) seamlessly. I had no idea until just now that the two spaces were different in any way - I thought it was simply a way to separate work and personal items. (I use a free account, so maybe that’s why, LOL.)

Also… why aren’t we being given an option to simply migrate to free accounts? At least for those of us who specifically say that’s what we want (opting-in). I obviously don’t know the backend coding side of this, but, it seems like it would be a LOT easier to migrate these accounts instead of us having to do it by CSV file and losing comments, attachments, images, etc. (I’m glad now that I wasn’t able to convince my husband to let me put our business planning in my Personal Projects. I can’t even imagine having to pull all of that info manually  .) I’d think that once you mapped the fields in the discontinued Personal Projects into the fields of the regular workspace projects, it’d convert over easy peasy?? I know that when companies migrate from one ERP to another, there’s always things to be corrected post-conversion, sure, but this is from one Asana product to another….

Hi @Tiffany_Terry, thank you for your post and sorry for any confusion regarding Personal Projects being discontinued. Unfortunately, Personal Projects is a very old feature built on a completely different structure, and it hasn’t been supported in many areas for quite some time. Because of this, we aren’t able to automate the migration on our end.

You can still have a similar setup by moving your personal tasks from the Legacy Personal Projects space into a workspace. Here’s a quick breakdown of each space:

  • Personal Projects: was an older, individual-only version of Asana. It ran separately from all other spaces and had a different structure, which is why it’s being deprecated.

  • Organization: represents a company in Asana and is tied to a work email domain (e.g., @company.com). Within an organization, you can set up multiple teams, and each team can have projects. Anyone with the same company email can join the organization.

  • Workspace: is a smaller setup, like a floating team, and it isn’t tied to a company domain. It’s often used for freelancers, small groups, or personal projects. Workspaces support all the same core Asana features as an organization, but still work well for smaller setups such as individual use.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: If you migrate from Personal Projects into a workspace, you remain in full control of who has access. By default, a workspace you create is private to you. No one else can see your projects or tasks unless you explicitly invite them.

Switching between personal and work tasks

  • If you’re a member of an organization using your corporate email address, you can create your personal workspace with the same account and email address, allowing you to switch between your work organization and personal workspace directly from your profile picture (no login switching required). Data in your personal workspace will remain private. On mobile, you’ll also continue receiving notifications from both your work organization and your personal workspace, without needing to switch accounts. More info here.

  • If you prefer to keep your personal workspace tied to a different personal email address, the accounts will be separate, so you’ll need to switch between accounts. You can link both accounts for a smoother account login switch from your profile picture. More info here. Please note that in this setup, you’ll only receive mobile notifications for whichever account is active in the app.

I hope this helps!

How can I tell if my Projects are personal or workspace?

Got this email:

| Hi there,

We’re reaching out to let you know that Asana’s “Personal Projects” space is being discontinued on December 15, 2025. After that date, you will no longer be able to access this space or any data stored there.

To retain your data, we recommend exporting your projects and tasks to a free Asana workspace or moving them into an existing organization. Step-by-step instructions are available in our Help Article. You can continue using Asana at no cost in a free workspace, or choose to upgrade to a paid plan if you need additional features and support.

This change only affects your Personal Projects space and does not impact any other Asana workspaces or organizations you may belong to. To find your “Personal Projects” space, log into your Asana account, click your profile picture, and look for “Personal Projects” in the dropdown.

If you have questions about this change, visit our Community Forum, where our team and community leaders are ready to help.

Thank you for being a valued Asana user.

Welcome, @Samantha_Belanger,

I’ve merged your post into an existing topic. Please read the solution here, which will answer your question.

Thanks,

Larry

Thank you, Vanessa! That was actually really helpful.

Quick question - If I leave my organization but have a Personal workspace set up, is there a way to convert the Personal workspace into it’s own separate account later? Or, could I change the email address on my account, delete everything work-related (because it’s just me, all alone, in my “Team”) and/or remove myself from the Work workspace and organization, to be left with no Work workspace/organization and only a Personal workspace that I can continue using? Or, could I do that without changing my email address (since as an alumni I’ll retain access to the email account as a student, not an employee)?

I have another question about the workspaces, but it may be more specific to my situation and not really helpful in a forum format. Basically, I have “2” options for creating a new workspace, and I’m not sure I like either one! I thought I’d be able to create a Personal workspace within my organization, but this indicates that I cannot. Is this something that was restricted by my company, where users from other organizations aren’t necessarily restricted? If so, I have more questions… I guess I’d need to create a help ticket?

So I get that under my Login I have 2 accounts and one of them is the old “Personal Projects” which is being discontinued.
Looks like what I should do is create a “Personal Workspace” under my login so that when I log in I can switch between my “Organization Account” and the new “Personal Workspace” - as opposed to “Personal Projects”.
I cant figure out how to create this new “Personal Workspace”.

@Tiffany_Terry @Steve75 Assuming that your ‘Personal Projects’ space contains personal work, we recommend signing up for a new, free workspace using your personal email (Gmail.com, iCloud.com, etc.). Step by step process for performing the data copy and creating a new workspace can be found in this help article. After you have created the workspace, you can link it to your profile using Asana’s account switcher, allowing you to switch from one space to another easily, much as you do today.

Hi,

I understand that migrating tasks is possible but is there any way to migrate comments as well?

Thanks!

Hi @TR11,

FYI I merged your post with an existing thread regarding Personal Projects.

As you probably know, the Asana CSV transfer method does not include comments or attachments. To include those, please take a look at the Ditto tool; it’s the standard tool we all here in the forum recommend for Asana data transfers like this.

Just FYI and for the ther users here: I have just now tried to use Ditto to migrate a large number of files (several hundred) and comments etc and so far it looks as if it has worked perfectly and easily. I’m going to send the guy a donation to say thanks.

Thank you for this, is a team member able to make simple video showing the step by step of switching over from a personal project to new workspace?
