Comment link and content available in rules

A variable to get the comment link would improve several of our flows and make new ones possible. The roll-out of direct links to specific comments came in April, 2021 ( Link to comments - #25 ).

I imagine it would be complex to make this variable constantly available in rule builds, but our use would be in rules that trigger on “When comment is added.” We’d like in this scenario to see actions enabling us to use the comment content or the direct comment link, similar to what is available to get task description or link. This would not only allow us to automate creating tasks from comments (with comment content in description and link back to originating comment)*, but also extend our work and notifications outside Asana, making our integrations more meaningful and reducing clicks and scrolls. Examples: post only the latest comment content in a Teams channel and provide link back to comment; drop comment content and link in a task description that is used to trigger Power Automate flows and options exponentially multiply.

*Others have posed similar questions in these posts, and this idea might meet some of the needs mentioned. However, I believe my request is not repeated elsewhere and should not be merged with others, as they have their own nuance.

  1. Add variable for latest comment so that can be used in rules (May, 2025 – half of my request… merge with mine?)
  2. Create a new task from comment (June, 2024 – still open with votes… option to manually create)
  3. Create New Task from text in Descriptions or Comments (July, 2021 – closed as a launched feature though it did not include comments)
  4. Create a new task from a comment against a previous one. (March, 2023 – merged with above though it did not include comments)
  5. Add quick view for linked comments (November, 2024 – this idea would couple nicely but I would still want full text of comment available as a variable in actions)
  6. 🔗 Introducing Reference custom fields! (September, 2025 - does not include comments, but this framework is an easy opportunity to include related comments in reference field)
  7. Custom Field showing "Last Comment/Update" of a task would be invaluable - #42 by CraigD (August, 2022 – involves separate field and AI, which isn’t available to us with HIPAA compliance on our Enterprise account)
  8. Receive new Asana comments in Slack channel - #62 by Anutham (May, 2018 – example of integration that would benefit from these variable options)
