@Richard_Sather, looking forward to the update - but now I’m not sure. This is very important functionally to have. Understand where a mistake could be made, but no one should be dragging and dropping projects unless they know what they’re doing lol
Hi @Cathryn_Strupe , totally agree, but the functionality is still possible via the project action menu.
@Lisa_Parziale , @Jay_Richards
The recent issues discussed above have led me to add 4.5 & 4.6 in the guide above ![]()
Thank you all for your engagement! ![]()
Please feel free to create a new topic in the Product Feedback section for any of the issues you have raised.
Thank you Marie
Any idea when this update (light mode sidebar) will be available ? thank you
Does this mean that for users who have a workspace rather than an organization (and therefore don’t have access to teams), there will be no way to group or organise projects? I currently organise my projects into categories in the sidebar by separating each category with empty projects, as pictured.
Workspace is very much like Team in the new design, so there’s a Workspace page (like a Team page) where you can drag and drop projects, and there’s a Workspace flyout menu (like a Team flyout) where you can see the ordered projects list (but not drag and drop there).

This is a terrible redesign. I need to see all my projects at once. At least give me an option to view it like that, not just the unhelpful two they have given.
Is there an option to revert back to the old one? The way we use projects, this made things way more inconvenient. An option in the personal settings to revert back to the old one would be amazing.
Thanks for any tips anyone may have on this.
Sorry, there is not. I wouldn’t expect to see such an option, as Asana has never provided an option to choose an older or newer UI (at least not in the 5 or 6 years I’ve been using it).
Indeed, having been an Asana premium user for 4 years, I can confirm that there are no alternative options provided. While some aspects of the navigation experience are unsatisfactory, there is no other project management tool that operates as swiftly as Asana. Thus, we are left with a decision to either tolerate these shortcomings or seek another platform.
Sad but true…
When will the new sidebar be released? Still waiting!
Only a couple of my workspaces have been updated so far. Maybe try creating a New Workspace to test the new sidebar.
I also use asana as my personal knowledge base (second brain) where I needed an overview of a long list of projects (mostly in alphabetical order).
I also used to select multiple tasks and drag & drop them into a project in the sidebar when reorganizing.
Asana stays the most responsive tool for work management, but I’m going to have to consider alternatives for knowledge bases. Especially since I’ve been waiting for years in vain on a simple tree structure for the sidebar.
Hi @Youssef_Hachhouch , I can empathise with your frustration, however I believe that the ‘Starred’ section (former ‘Favorites’ could replicate what you need. As a test, I have starred over 50 items in the Starred section without hitting any limitations so far.
So you could star all your projects to have them listed under the Starred section where you can arrange them alphabetically or however you choose to. Then you could collapse the Team section if you don’t need to use it for your knowledge base.
Does that work for you?
PS: @BOSSO , you may also find this helpful.
Morning @Richard_Sather . We have considered that option but I always reserved the star section for my top projects. So if I now use that for all my projects I am still losing something, can’t win… plus I have 10 employees and I have to ask them to star every project every time there is something new. It’s bonkers.
I was looking at alternatives yesterday, I think I will just switch. I can’t run a business like this. I am so disappointed in Asana.
Thanks @Richard_Sather I’ll try it that way once those Workspaces get upgraded.
A quick test seems to work for my personal use, but like @BOSSO replied, hardly an option for large organizations.
This is a good tip but not when you have a lot of projects and I have to keep clicking on Show More until I get to the latest projects and then have to individually drag each project all the way to the top. I really miss the old design.
Hi @Charmaine_Bingcang , welcome to the forum ![]()
May I just clarify that my ‘tip’ was in reply to being able to sort projects within a team. What you describe was no different in the old sidebar where you still had to click on ‘show more’ within an expanded team to get to the bottom of the list to reach a newly added project, so that you can drag it up to where you want. So I’m not sure what it is that you are missing from the old design; the ability to do this within the sidebar rather than within a team page? ![]()
But when you have numerous projects that you just want to browse through, it is much easier to click on the
next to the team’s name to get the flyout list which actually scrolls all projects within a team, without having to click any 'show more’s, unlike the old sidebar.
The decision to take away users’ ability to manually sort their projects is incredibly frustrating. Please restore the ability to manually sort projects in the sidebar and to switch off the folder view.
I am on the paid plan with 3 additional users and have not had the update take place yet on my account. How can I force it to update? I signed up when the opportunity first came out.
Please help!
HI @Mark_Fernandes , I also have a few workspaces that haven’t been upgraded yet. The roll out is gradual so I expect it won’t be much longer until it also reaches your account.
If you were part of the early release, your account will have the ability to enable the new sidebar, by toggling the relevant switch in your My Settings>Hacks: Navigation Tests (Early Access)
