Today automation stopped working - Asana wants me to Upgrade?

hi

I noticed that my tasks due today no longer auto update and appear in my Today section in My tasks
I view the today section on the web - My Tasks, and i have all my sections there including Today.

This is also the same on the android app.

Today has an automation that puts everything due today into that section.

2 days ago this stopped working.
It shows as disabled as of 2 days ago.

This is the Automation:
Due date is approaching Today → Move task to a certain section
ID: 1200372774983053

It now says I have to upgrade?
I have not changed or done anything, this has been working for years on the free plan.

Have asana changed something which means you now have to pay for this?
This is the first section i went to every morning and if you now have to pay for this it is extremely annoying and i will have to look for alternative solutions.

sorry, the correct term is a rule, not an automation.
its the little icon of a lightning bolt next to the section.
im in My Tasks view
when you click the lightning icon, it shows rules for this section, then when i click on it it asks me to upgrade.

it shows as last run 2 days ago, so what changed 2 days ago?

The same thing has happened to me. I also want to know what changed.

Hi @Jimmyss and @Rachel65,

I didn’t think rules were included in free plan, but maybe these My Tasks rules were an exception as you say you’ve had them working for years.

Am I correct in assuming these rules with the old rule builder? (Trigger to action in direction top to bottom as opposed to left to right)

I’d like to propose a workaround for this specific rule. You can group My Tasks by due date instead of sections. This means you won’t need to use rules anymore to group tasks by due date. You can find more info on group/sort/filter options in this thread: 🪄 Design magical tabs with group, sort, and filter!

Meanwhile flagging this thread for @Forum-team to see if they might know what’s going on.

I noticed that it appears v1 rules broke at least a couple days ago but v2 rules work fine. I have a Support request in but haven’t heard back.

Looking forward to hearing from the Forum Team…

Thanks,

Larry

Doing a search, it now shows rules as only available for paid users, and this appears to have changed 2 days ago
How annoying that they have removed features from legacy users rather than just new signups.

I dont know the difference between rules v1 and v2 but ill see if i can look.

Ill take a look at that mytask setup too

I am having the same issue. It also says it happened 3 days ago. I have never had the paid version and these rules for moving my tasks to “Today” when the due date is the currrent date was working fine! I would love to have this restored again (:

Unless they allow legacy and older account with pre access to keep it, you now need to upgrade to paid

To the best of my recollection: This used to be basic functionality built into the system from the start. Then when rules and sections were revamped a few years ago, the Today section rules were either implemented automatically or provided as examples.

It seems a policy change for rules has broken this essential functionality.

The question is, was this an accidental side effect of a separate change, or is it functionality that has intentionally been removed from the personal tier?

Is there some way to get an official answer to this? I need to know whether this is an accident that will be fixed or the effective end of the personal tier.

Following on this. Had this same exact problem of my only free Rule is now only for paid versions.

I have the same issue. I’m using Asana for ~15 years and it has always worked.

When I saw that now it’s a paid feature, I decided to pay (it’s $13/month), but… surprisingly found out that there are no plans for personal use (1-seat plans), so I have to pay $26/month. That’s too much for this feature.

Have the same issue - rule for due date in “My Tasks” just broke.
Please allow it again.

Hi, all.

This issue appears to be related to the announcement in November 2023.
It is stated that the transition will be complete by 2025.

Alas, I believe we cannot revert to the way things were, hence I propose the following practical measures.

Many may find the content of this thread difficult to understand regarding the functions of MyTask. In such a case, it might be advisable to refer to this.

I think I have this same issue with the old V1 rules breaking - very unfortunate bug to have been introduced. It’s moving all tasks to my target section - not just ones due today.

The reported issue re free vs paid didn’t apply to me so my workaround was just to pause the v1 versions of the rules and re-implement them as active v2 versions. That resolved it for me, so perhaps could help others too.

Thanks,

Larry

The proposed work around above doesnt work, because you cant use that view with Sections, and i use sections.
This does not work with how ive got asana setup and how i use it.
Yes you can see items for today, but you cant press the double arrows and quickly move single or bulk items into sections, or drag and drop into sections.

I use the My Task view as a list with my own custom sections. The rules put all due tasks into Today, then i sort off of them into the correct sections.
This is how ive been using asana for years.

If there is a better way im open to changing the way i use it.

I also cant find anything explaining or demonstrating v1 rules vs v2 rules, how they differ and how to pause v1 and setup new v2 rules to do the same?

@Jimmyss,

It’s hard to give helpful info here because I’m not sure of changes that might have occurred in Asana until we learn more from Support or the Forum Team here, and also because it would be necessary to see the details of your My Tasks configuration and your rules.

You can recognize a “v1” rule becuase in the rules editor you’ll see a single vertical column of boxe. In “v2” rules, the boxes appear in two or three columns, not one. In either, you’ll see somewhere an indication of whether a rule is Active or Paused and have a way to toggle that state.

Thanks,

Larry

I just noticed this under rules. I have to upgrade to restore the rules. Guess its time to explore other options. This tiny company can’t justify the cost. It’s more than google workplace.

Hi @Cory_Craig1,

This is a v1 rule-builder rule. I posted a solution that doesn’t require any rules earlier in this topic:

Also curious, are you not able to ignore this upgrade button and create a new rule?

lpb - thanks for the help and explanation of v1 and v2.
It does look as though you could be correct.
i was using vertical rules, the ones you called v1, and these stopped working.
I created a new rule, using what you call v2, which is horizontal, and it allowed me to set some new rules up which look like they should work.
As far as i know, these run at midnight, and i cant find a way to manually run them, and so ill have to wait until after midnight to see if they work.

Jan-Rienk - thanks for your help, however your proposed work around does not work with how i have asana and My Tasks setup.
your work around specifically says “You can group My Tasks by due date instead of sections”, however I have Sections setup and use this as my permenant view on both mobile and laptop/web browser.
If you sort like you said, you can not bulk select tasks and move them to a different section, and you can not press the little double arrow and move them instantly to another sections without opening up the task.
