Subtask Visibility

There has been a lot of great information about subtasks provided by Forum Leaders and Members alike. Check out Bastien & Larry’s video for example!

Recently, I’ve adopted a best practice that I thought was worth sharing: anytime I am using subtasks within a task that may have a different assignee, or even a different due date, I manually add them back to the project under an appropriate section to increase visibility. This is especially useful when using any view other than the list view, or a list view with applied grouping or sort which removes the ability to expand the parent task.

Here is an example of what that looks like in the Board view.

To add a subtask back to the project, simply open it, select the three dots in the upper-right-hand corner and select “Add to projects”. From there you can type the name of the project and select the section from the dropdown menu.

Thanks, @Jeremy_Long, for the tip (and callout!).

Yes, that’s a useful tip and good practice when you’re trying to increase the visibility of the subtask within the parent task’s project.

Sometimes, it’s not necessary, though, for example those cases where visibility in the subtask’s project membership (where it automatically appears as a top-level task) is enough.

A slight shortcut: Instead of using the Task actions “…” menu and choosing Add to Projects, Tab + P does the job too.

Thanks,

Larry
