It would be great to see progress of subtasks from the list view without clicking into the tasks. For example, if you saw someone’s photo or initials in a box next to the task name, you would know that a subtask was assigned. And if it was checked off, you’d know the subtask was completed, without needing to click into each task. I don’t have an idea for how to designate exactly WHAT the subtask is, but maybe individual teams can decide on orders for their subtask so you know what the first, second, third, etc, subtasks are and you know which ones are assigned/completed.
Because only tasks marked complete are included in the progress status our leadership looks at for % of a project currently completed, we are now forced to make everything a task and avoid using subtasks altogether. This makes most project boards an unwieldy mess that are not only awful to create but essentially worthless to use for actual project management because you cannot accommodate any scaffolding of project components. This could be easily remedied by including sub-tasks in the calculations for how many tasks are in project and what percentage of a project is complete.
Hi @Meg_Osterbur, welcome to the Asana Community Forum and thanks for sharing your feedback with us! We already have a thread on this topic so I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with Subtask Progress Indicator & Bar to consolidate feedback.
Hi @Emily_Roman,
This thread dates back to October 2018, which is three years ago! Could you provide an update on where Asana is with this product revision?
Thanks!
Hi Emily,
I don’t see any solutions to this issue on the thread you linked. Am I missing something?
@Emily_Roman
I want to raise the issues both Paul_Huckett and Nicole_Hazari have pointed out:
Let’s make this constructive and concrete with a question. Are there plans in the future to integrate subtask completion into the project % complete calculations?
Switch to Notion.so. It’s fairly easy to create custom indicators. Examples can be found e.g. on notion.vip (I am not affiliated with that site).
I would find it incredibly helpful to be able to see not just the total amount of sub tasks but also the amount that is complete vs outstanding (5/7). My team has a lot of sub tasks that have sub tasks (fun complexities of managing 34 country sites in 22 languages). Since you can only see how many sub tasks there are you have to click into each individual sub task to see what the progress is for the sub tasks within that sub task.
Hi @Paige_Porter, thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback!
We do have an existing thread for this feature request in the #productfeedback category so I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with the existing one to consolidate feedback.
I’ll keep you posted and let you know if I have any updates
Hey Rebecca, can you at least link that ‘existing’ thread that you mentioned here. Thanks!
Not sure if this will be solved any time soon, since afaik subtasks and subtasks of subtastsks are calculated into the “Workload”
This could be solved bei integrating custom fields and custom searches.
Solution: An easy way to check the status of subtasks is the board view. Just click on the little triangle next to subtasks an it opens up all the subtasks. This way you can check the subtasks status in about 1 second
Is there an option (or enhancement request) to view subtask summary within the parent task to capture incomplete subtasks?
As there is no rule to block users from marking a parent task complete if sub-tasks are incomplete, this is would be a great validation step.
See screenshot as example.
Thanks!
Hey @Raffaella,
here is an existing feedback request thread you might be interested in upvoting: Mark all subtasks complete before allowing tasks to be marked complete
Potentially also this is of interest to you: Visualise progress of subtasks at a glance
Since subtasks can now be included in charts you can maybe set up some starts to get an overview on the status there.
Thanks Andrea - the other threads are useful for context but don’t provide a solution. Appreciate the info though!
Hey @Raffaella, I have found another feedback request thread now which seems to be exactly about what you are asking so I have merged your request. Don‘t forget to upvote.
Is it possible to have a calculated field that looks at % of completed subtasks? I see this is available but New! Custom field rollups in portfolios for increased visibility into key metrics. Basically the top-level task would show a percentage of completed subtasks in another field.
Thank you,
Jon
Hello @Jon_Alden, the thread you are referring to is for portfolios.
Now for the subtask completion % indicator, I have found another existing thread so I have merged your post into that. Don’t forget to leave your vote at the top of this thread.
