Recurring Tasks on certain day/week of month not the actual day

Hello all,

Our office is open Monday through Friday and closed on weekends. The issue I am having is if I have a monthly task assigned for the 1st of each month, there are times where the 1st falls on a weekend and if that happens I would like my notification to happen the earliest business day prior, say the 31st was the Friday before the 1st, in this instance I would need to finish my task on the 31st and not the 1st as we are closed on the day the task repeats monthly.

Is there an ability that lets me apply logic to repeating tasks to know our hours of operation? For now all I can seem to do it create 12 tasks for the year with specific dates where I organize when the 1st of each month is and adjust times accordingly, depending if the 1st is on a weekend or not.

Thanks,

I work different days on different projects, so it’s really important to be able to schedule tasks on specific days, but currently you can only set tasks to repeat on dates, which means I have to manually change each month’s tasks back to the day I need.

I’ve contacted Asana and they say there are no plans to introduce this, which I find incredible. Looking back through the forums I see this has been requested before. Other apps I use are able to offer this facility so why is Asana not able to?

I really hope Asana will be able to introduce this, it would really help!

Anyone else have the same issues?

Thanks! :crossed_fingers::blush:

Welcome to the Forum @Joy_Tubby and thank you for sharing your feedback with us?

What about setting your tasks to repeat weekly? You can choose on which day of the week you want the task to repeat and you can also set an interval: every 1, 2, 3,…X weeks!

Would that help?

That’s ok for weekly scheduling but doesn’t work if I want to schedule a task for say the third Tuesday every month. I tend to do a lot of monthly or quarterly schedules.

Got it @Joy_Tubby! Thank you for the clarification.

I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with an existing thread we have on this topic to avoid duplications. Please don’t forget to cast your vote.

Thank you Joy! Have a nice day!

I agree, it makes no sense not to have this basic feature. Asana has added so many bells and whistles in the years since this was first requested but not this really standard functionality. It’s a real shame. Asana is great for me except for this glaring and inexplicable omission.

Thanks Andy, glad you agree! Otherwise I think Asana is great.

I would really like to see this feature. If you’ve got a task that needs to be performed every 6 months, for example, it’s silly that this can’t be scheduled to avoid being on a weekend. I use Todoist for my personal task management and this has been a feature for years, so I don’t understand why Asana wouldn’t consider adding it.

Yes, please! This would be so helpful! I can’t believe it hasn’t been added already, especially when people have clearly been requesting it for years now.

Yes, why have a repeat function that doesn’t recognize an option like “the 2nd Monday”.

Take a look at ClickUp it has this feature, I just moved over to Asana and testing it for my company now. But it looks like in the 3 years that has been an issue there is no update? Odd

So you are saying “You can choose on which day of the week you want the task to repeat” SO I can have a task to repeat the third Wed of every month or the second Tues? I tried this morning but no such luck

This thread was started in 2017 and they have not addressed it. Come on, guys, it’s a basic feature. I will also recommend ClickUp for people looking to have this feature, it really messes with my team’s due dates.

I’ve invested a lot of time in Asana and don’t want to switch away but it’s under consideration now.

Completely baffling why they haven’t added the ability to repeat tasks monthly other than on a fixed date. Who would want a task to be done on the 10th of every month regardless of which day of the week that happens to be?!

I’ve been checking this thread every couple months since 2017, baffling this feature hasn’t been added yet. Every time I advocate for Asana to a friend, there is always a “but you should know this feature doesn’t exist” and it kills any interest in the app.

Wow! I can’t believe this feature is not available!

I find the silence on this feature very strange. It might not be a flashy function, but having a more robust recurring task system is essential for this type of app (and is available in many competing apps).

I would find a recurring task option on certain day or week of the month extremely helpful!

Hello Asana Community,

I am opening this topic to raise awareness to a feature that I think would be very useful to a lot of us here. Given the fact that most of us are using Asana for business-use, it also means it is likely that the majority of us are operating on a business schedule — from Monday to Friday (or whatever your operational week is).

Currently, we have the ability to set monthly tasks that repeat on a specific numerical day, but here is where there’s a shortfall… If I set up a task to be done on the first or last numerical day of every month, there will be a few days in that fiscal year where those days wind up being on a Saturday or Sunday. Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t work on the weekends. So I don’t want my repeat tasks there.

To give you a better idea of what I mean, let’s use 2018 as the calendar year and September 2018 as an example of when this would work amazingly:

In January 2018, I set up two tasks to be repeated; one on the first work day (Monday) and one on the last work day (Friday) of each month — never ending. Now, if we advance in time to September 2018, that task would repeat on the 1st work day (Monday, September 3rd) and the last work day (Friday, September 28th) of that month.

How awesome would that be? I think pretty damn awesome! As it stands, I have to manually change the dates every month as they come up in the “My Tasks” view?

Hopefully I’ve explained this well enough. Let me know what everyone thinks.
