Project template - Avoiding weekend deadlines but not skipping every weekend

I’m trying to create a project template with relative deadlines. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, I want to shift it to the nearest non-holiday weekday (i.e. a Saturday deadline becomes Friday, a Sunday deadline becomes Monday). I do NOT want to skip every weekend. In other words, if the deadline is 10 days before the due date, I want it to be 10 calendar days before the due date, not 10 weekdays. If i choose “skip weekends,” it seems to skip every weekend (or in other words, to only count weekdays). Is there a way around this?

Hi @Lydia_Broderick , unfortunately this is not currently possible.

Others may weigh in with workarounds..?

I generally suggest to sketch out your template using a project’s Gantt view and avoid any tasks that land on weekends. Then convert the project to a template to get the expected results.

One way of managing holidays, but post project creation, is this:

Try to use Asana AI Studio and describe your requirements. We set deadlines without weekends via AI rules, perhaps you can describe your tasks to Asana AI.

Hey @Lydia_Broderick, This is a tricky one because Asana’s native “skip weekends” option counts only weekdays, which isn’t quite what you want. Unfortunately, Asana doesn’t currently support shifting due dates only when they land on weekends or holidays while otherwise counting calendar days.

One workaround is to keep your deadlines set by calendar days, and then use an automation (like a rule or third-party tool) to adjust any due dates that fall on weekends or holidays to the nearest weekday. For example, a simple Zapier or Make (Integromat) automation could check task due dates after creation and move weekend deadlines to Friday or Monday accordingly.

Alternatively, you might build this logic into your project template by manually setting buffer days around weekends or holidays, but that can get cumbersome.
