👉 Ongoing vs. One-off projects: We need recurring monthly budgets & timesheets!

Hey guys!

I have a challenge regarding project types and budgeting (both for hours and money).

Right now, Asana treats all projects the same. But in reality, we have two types: one-off projects (with a clear start/end date) and ongoing projects (like monthly retainers or ongoing marketing campaigns).

I know we can use custom fields to label them, but here is where it breaks: Timesheets and Budgets.

If I have a client on a 30-hour monthly retainer and I want to use Asana’s native time-tracking/billing features, Asana will always calculate the total sum of the project. It doesn’t understand “monthly cycles.”

To make this work right now, I have two bad options:

  1. Create a brand new project every single month (which is a mess for history and organization).
  2. Estimate the total hours for the entire contract period (e.g., 6 months = 180 hours), which doesn’t help me track if we went over budget this specific month.

The same goes for ad spend budgets in marketing projects. We need to see “what we spent this month”, but Asana aggregates everything.

My suggestion:
Give us a setting to define a project as “Ongoing/Recurring” and let us set monthly recurring budgets (hours or money). That way, timesheets and budget progress bars would automatically reset or show monthly slices.

Would this help your workflow too? Let me know! :backhand_index_pointing_down:
