Now available: Drive work forward from anywhere online, using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge

Hi Asana Community!

I’m Vicky Phan from Asana’s Product Marketing team, and I’m excited to share that we’ve begun rolling out new functionality for our Asana + Google Chrome extension!

Note: This extension is also usable in the Microsoft Edge browser, once downloaded from the Google Chrome store.

Accessing this extension

The Asana Chrome Extension allows you to easily organize and coordinate work from wherever you are on a webpage, while using the Chrome browser. Under Extensions, you can pin this extension for easy access to this functionality.

Easily creating tasks from anywhere in Chrome

With this updated functionality, you can create tasks from anywhere on the internet, while using Google Chrome (or Microsoft Edge). When using email, you can easily create a task by clicking the “Create Task” button from within your email interface.

My personal favorite update is that you can now also quickly add tasks to Asana from any webpage, by highlighting any text, and opening the right-click menu to create a task–easy peasy! And if you need to bookmark something for later, you can also easily add your current URL as a task, so you can read or share information at a later time.

Searching for and creating tasks where you’re already working

When you’re heads down and in the flow, you can also easily search for any task right from your browser, and update it as new work context arises–all from where you’re already working. And to even further connect your work together, you can copy the links into a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide in order to convert them into Google smart chips.

How do I get started?

Download the Asana Chrome Extension from the Chrome store here, to access this functionality.

Note: This extension is also usable in the Microsoft Edge browser, once downloaded from the Google Chrome store.

Where to learn more?

For more in-depth details about the set-up and usage of this integration, visit the Asana Guide.

This integration is free to use on our Personal plan.

As always, we are excited to hear your thoughts and feedback! What are some ways this integration will help you coordinate work on the go, reduce duplicative data entry, and partner even better together?

Comment below and let us know how we can help you continue to drive teamwork and collaboration at your organization. Thanks!

Hi @Vicky_Phan . Thanks for sharing about this update! Unfortunately, when I tried it I had difficulty in getting it to work. Since I am part of multiple Asana accounts/workspaces as a consultant, I couldn’t seem to figure out a way to select the correct account for it to utilize. It kept trying to pull from my personal Asana workspace rather than my business workspace.

Thoughts?

Wayne

@Wayne_Hedlund1, You should be able to do this with the “…” overflow menu at the top right:

We’ve all been there (present company included)!

This is such a BIG thing! I love even the old add-on but this is much better. BTW what about comments?

Why there is no additional fields where we can fill whatever we have setup in project?

The Create Task button from emails doesn’t work for me. It behaves like the extension button, so the task it creates is for the entire Inbox tab, not the specific email.

Not working with Edge, what can I do ?

Hi @Brian_Pavlovich, would you be able to reach out to our Support team with more details and screenshots, please? They will be able to further troubleshoot it for you.

Hi @Tim_Völker, I’ve just tested on my end, and the extension is working normally on Edge. I’d recommend updating your browser and trying to install the extension again. If the issue persists, please contact our Support team and they will be able to assist you further.

Was it fully launched to everyone?

Hi @Bastien_Siebman! This is fully rolled out  Let us know if you have any questions!

Is it possible to highlight specific text within Google Docs and create a task with that highlighted text as the task name? It looks like when I’m in Google Docs and I click on the extension, it just creates a task name with the title of the doc, even though I am highlighting a specific text within the doc. The ask based on this thread from 2017 was a way to easily assign tasks by highlighting texts (as I believe a lot of people use Google Docs for the weekly stand ups and for action items).

It feels like the team got a little bit closer with this update, but it’s still not what was requested by the 102 users on that thread. Please take a closer look at the asks on that thread that has been open since 2017 and re-open the thread as it wasn’t a full solution.

@Emily_Roman @Vicky_Phan bumping my above comments as I saw this topic is closing in 5 days!

Hi @Vivian_Phang, welcome to the Asana Forum! As it stands, it’s not possible to create tasks by highlighting text in Google Docs. We will continue improving our integrations and we will make sure to comment on the feedback thread if this option becomes available in the future. Thanks for your feedback!

Thank you, @Emily_Roma! Any updates on timeline for this or where this ask currently sits on the product launch timeline?

Asana usually doesn’t provide such timeline, you need to wait for an announcement here
