Manual changing of the Date Task is Completed

Can I ask how this is progressing? It has been a while…??

Without this feature it is not possible to manage the projects in the best way. What if I can’t connect to internet? What if I update the task completion once a week during the steering meeting with other members of the team?

Hi, is there a way to change the completed date of a task after that task has been marked as completed?

Not directly. You can unmark the task as completed, then mark it complete again and it will set the completed date to today’s date. That’s really the only way to alter the completed date I know of.

Hi Patrick, it’s a no if you want to change the finished date to in the past, we all forget to hit the completed button sometimes, and it disturbs reporting.

I have created custom fields to do this, it’s still not a perfect solution as the custom fields are text as date format does not exist.

“does not exist yet…”

Asana has let us know that date-type custom fields (and a few other new custom field types) are coming; they’re just not quite here yet.

Seems a major shortcoming not to be able to mark the date I actually completed the task (date in past) - a deal-breaking kind of major IMO.

Just want to add my support for this capacity. There is this thread here that I believe requests this feature but only has 3 votes so far. Very hard to assess staff productivity or put together accurate reports if completion dates are solely determined by the moment that the check button is clicked. Need to be able to backfill completed tasks in a way that does not break the flow of the real timeline.

Thanks.

As well as using Asana for Project management, my team uses the tool for keeping track of important projects in the lifecycle of a project. Sometimes, even though a team-member completes a task before the due date, they forget to mark it as complete.

Is there a way to retroactively change the completion date to match actual completion dates for tasks that won’t always be crossed off on time?

Welcome
Not yet, this is something that has been asked before I think, I’ll ask the moderation team to merge your thread with the other one.

Thanks @Bastien_Siebman and welcome @Tristan_Thomas_Sagge :wave:t3:

We already have a #productfeedback thread on this topic so I’ve gone ahead and merged this thread with https://forum.asana.com/t/is-there-a-way-to-change-the-completed-date-of-a-task/37195/3 to gatehr all feedback in one place

I was surprised to find that you can’t back-date a completion date to when a task was actually completed. People mentioned adding custom fields an such to address this, but we should be able to modify the completion date of the task, not a custom field that we have to create. Has this been corrected yet? Thank you.

Hi @Eric_Kappmeier and welcome to the forum!

This behavior is still in effect; not possible to change the completed date of a task. If you haven’t yet, be sure to add your vote for this enhancement at the top of the page.

Hello. Is it possible to change the completed date? So if someone forgot to mark a job as complete, would I be able to manually change it to show the correct date is was completed on?

Hi @perfectgardens, thanks for reaching out!

As it stands, it’s currently not possible to change the date a task was mark complete. We have a request in our #productfeedback category for this feature so I have gone ahead and merge your post with the main thread to centralize feedback. We’ll update the main thread once we have any updates!

Hello, There are times in which we are post-entering data into ASANA and it would be helpful if we can allow our staff to change the completion date to the actual date/time they completed the task.

I can see why this would be useful, but in the way we use Asana the event of changing the completion date would have to be logged, so that it is obvious that it is the real or manually entered date.

My assumption was that it would log near the comment box as every other change in asana is. If I, as a manager needed to see why a completion date was changed, I can then ask the team member about it. Any other change they make (ie change a due date) is logged, I don’t understand why a complete date couldn’t be too.

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us, @Herve_Buisset and @Rockey_Adams! As it stands, it’s currently not possible to manually update the completion date of a task. We already have a thread on this topic so I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with Manual changing of the Date Task is Completed to consolidate feedback. Hopefully this is something we can implement in the future!

Hi There!

Just wanted to check in to see if there have been any updates to this?
It would be fantastic if we could back date completion dates however at this time if I fail to click completion on the actual completion date or if I accidentally unclick the completion tick mark, the real completion date cannot be reflected anymore.

For control processes, it would be great if some functionality or work around for this would be available!!
