I’ve recently noticed that the Asana interface now has a column on the far left with “work, strategy, workflow, and people” buttons. I never use them for anything and have “Work” selected 100% of the time. If you click the 3 lines at the top, it is able to hide this column… but it also hides the next column over (with “Home, Inbox, My Tasks, etc”) which I do frequently use. It would be nice if you could detach these two columns from each other and just give us the option to hide the far left one.
The layout already feels a bit claustrophobic* at times so every little bit of screen real estate matters!*

*Secondary point but it can be very difficult to navigate if I’m going back and forth between a parent task full of subtasks and the individual subtasks themselves. It forces both of those items into the far right portion of the screen, which wastes so much of my screen! I attached a screenshot to illustrate what I mean. It would be nice if I could view a parent task on the left and the details of the subtask on the right instead of it forcing all of that information into the right half
Yeah, I think definitely agree regarding the sidebar. It would be nice if the annoying bit they added to the left could be collapsed while still leaving the other panel open.
The sidebar is already unintuitive as it is. I’d prefer Teams and Projects be in the same area. If I want a higher-level view of things, that’s what portfolios are for. I now find myself just using Portfolios for everything just so I can organize data at different tiers.
That said, while I do operate from the Work mode most of the time, I do find myself going into the Teams quite a bit because that’s how we think about projects and many of us work cross-functionality across teams. So now we just have to click around more. I use the ⌘K shortcut to search (but it seems to prioritize tasks over projects, teams, portfolios; which makes no sense to me—rarely do I need to navigate to a specific task from search).
Maybe if they ever add the command palette they talked about awhile back this would solve a lot of those things.
They should use all that empty space at the top of the screen between the create button and the search bar for these 4 section icons (work, strategy, workflow, people)
Agree completely. They have revised the sidebar SO many times over the last few years and each time it diverges more and more from how I actually work in Asana. Now Teams are buried a layer deeper, and my sidebar is wider and even more cluttered. It would be nice if some of these changes were OPTIONAL settings we could turn off, like Gmail’s various inbox options.
PLEASE Asana turn off this new noise in the left-hand sidebars or give us the option to do so. I am a translator; I only want to see my project and my tasks. I get that you have the sort of managerial-PM culture in mind with such developments but we, the prolos/“makers,” actually outnumber them at least 10 to 1 if not more I would think, and the better we use Asana, the better they use Asana too. TIA.
I fully agree. The new side bar has a bunch of features I never use and just gets in the way. It looks cluttered, makes quick navigation more difficult, and takes up precious space when viewing the app on a small laptop screen. This feature should be opt in/out.
