(Edit 8/7: I have added more screenshots and context to my post further down in this thread.)
As of this morning, we have lost the ability to expand tasks. This issue isn’t consistent throughout our projects - some projects we still have the ability to expand and others we don’t.
They are all top level tasks (see first screenshot) and I have turned off all filters, sorts and grouping in an attempt to troubleshoot (see second screenshot.)
Other team members are experiencing the same issue, however, it is also inconsistent. For example, one person can expand tasks in Project A but not in Project B, and another is experiencing the opposite.
Can anyone confirm if they are running in to the same issue or if this is a temporary bug? We rely on the ability to expand tasks heavily for production.
Unfortunately, third party add-ons that give us the ability to expand tasks cannot fill this gap as the inability to expand the tasks at the parent level primarily affects our contractors.
OK Team our company is really struggling with something.
There are time where the subtask dropdown arrow shows up, other times it doesn’t, and we cannot figure out why.
The other day I know for certain I had the dropdown arrow available on the view called “Full List” in the first pic, but NOT available in the view called “Will”.
Now, it’s exactly reversed. I dno’t have it on Full List, and I do have it on “Will” (or any of the others).
These are both list views and basically the same layout, one is just filtered for a custom field that has people’s name typed in (a “text”, not a “people” field).
Hi @Matt5 , from your screenshots, the difference I see is that Full list is grouped by a single-select field, while Will is grouped by Sections. I don’t see the filter you mention.
Unfortunately, this is not expected behavior (outside of the potential A/B test.) Most of my team have lost the ability to expand tasks regardless of how it is filtered, sorted or grouped. This is directly impacting our ability to reach a project deadline as our processes include our contractor flipping custom fields to indicate the status of their deliverable, which trigger a number of automations that affect other projects and teams.
We need to be able to expand the tasks so that we can see the custom fields of the subtasks and we do not have the time to recreate our entire project in Asana to accommodate for an A/B test without putting us in serious jeopardy of missing our deadline.
I reached out to Asana support and I have completed all of their suggested troubleshooting tricks, I have:
Tried multiple browsers, ensuring that they’re all updated, including Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Safari.
I have disabled all browser extensions.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the desktop app.
I have cleared my browser’s cache.
I have removed the sort and filters.
I am going to look more in to the A/B test @Jan-Rienk mentioned in a few moments and also respond to Asana support with this information because every moment we don’t have the ability to expand our tasks, the more at risk we are to miss our project deadline.
The first screenshot is what our project has looked like up until yesterday morning.
The second screenshot is of what it looks like now.
The last screenshot is showing the inability to expand with the filter, sort and grouping disabled.
I got confused, apparently something indeed changed. For a long time, that little arrow was not very reliable because it would disappear in some known cases, and I thought it was what was happening here
When I grouped my project it removed the ability to view the nested subtasks via triangle arrow on the side. I removed the grouped view and saved project but still not showing the little arrow on the left-hand side of the main task to be able to expand and see subtasks. I also checked the project its not sorted to anything. I used to be able to see the arrow on the side even If I group my project.
@Oscar_Setiawan - that is exactly what is happening to our team. Most of us lost the ability to expand tasks whether they are sorted, grouped, filtered or not. I have a ticket into Asana Support in addition to this post. If I hear anything back from support, I’ll be sure to update here.
@ChelsD - if you change your “Group By” to “Sections” and remove all custom sorts and custom filters, your dropdowns will come back.
If that doesn’t work, or if you want to discuss, since I’m obviously familiar with your projects, ping me in Asana if you want to hop on a damage control mtg.
@Bryan_TeamKickstart - Hey Bryan! Thanks a ton! I just noticed that was the case and created a workaround for our team leads to work from until either we are finished with the project at the end of the month or Asana rolls back the change.
@Kennedy_Hidalgo - see the conversation in this post for more context. I still do not have a solid answer whether this is a bug or this is intentional (as a result of an A/B test or otherwise) and whether or not this is how Asana will function going forward.
I had to make a workaround project for our team as we were losing valuable production time. Basically, I multihomed the tasks to a new project that has no sorting or filtering applied and I have it grouped by sections. This gave my team the ability to expand the tasks but still severely limits our primary project which relies on the ability to see subtasks and their custom fields in the primary view.
