Please return the overview of all projects under the ‘‘projects’’ section in the sidebar. They were removed during the last update on MacOS. I use it all the time for a quick overview and selecting projects I’m switching between. Just the (now showing) ten top or most recent projects aren’t helpful to me at all… I understand I can star all my projects to list them again manually under ‘‘starred’’ but why not give us an option for ‘‘All’’ next to ‘‘Top’’ and ‘‘Most recent’’ for the projects section in the sidebar?
This update kills my productivity with Asana profoundly.
The other problem is that everyone on a team has to remember to star new projects in order for them to appear in their starred list. If you forget, and you’re operating from that starred list, that project will be invisible to you.
These changes are just so incomprehensible. They have totally broken our workflow.
Adding another voice here. This is an unacceptable change. It’s also extremely hostile and non-inclusive to users with cognitive challenges. I use Asana 90% as an ADHD assistive tool, specifically to help me remember and keep track of everything I need to do. Out of sight = out of mind, and now Asana arbitrarily moves important projects out of sight.
I get that you need to evolve/experiment here, but clearly this experiment went…poorly. There are more than enough users here calling this a dealbreaker for many different reasons. This should not be hard to fix.
The new sidebar design in Asana is a deal breaker for myself and our organization. We should have been able to have the option to try it and “then” give feedback. Instead, crucial functionality has been stripped away. And, the inability to see a list of all of my projects is unacceptable. Asana has been a great tool for our organization, but I am inclined now to look around to see what else is out there. This was definitely not the way to roll out major changes on a tool that businesses rely on.
The sidebar organization changes are completely bonkers. You could always have favorites if you wanted them on top all the time, and there was already a recents section, but now you can’t see all your projects or sort them? How does the new view do anything but remove functionality and duplicate things you could already do? I’m trying to get this project adopted by my team and they’re ALLL going to complain, and rightly so. This is a downgrade pure and simple.
Also, when you’re ready to archive the project, don’t forget to UnStar it, to then remove it from the list (as I am using the list for Current Project Mgmt too).
this was a great workaround, I think I can dry my tears now. I’m so overwhelmed!!!
My goodness I hate the new sidebar design. Tried to hold reservation until it actually rolled out in case they made improvements.
What is happening to Asana?? Asana’s UX used to be magical.
Type a colon and you instantly get a Section. Wow!
A simple, navigable sidebar.
A streamlined My Tasks with a straightforward way of working and easy keyboard shortcuts.
Now what do we have? Much-loved features removed, a dumbed-down sidebar where you have to favorite every project to visually organize anything (or click and search all over the place), and a My Tasks that requires a masters degree to set up the rules to make it functional.
It’s not often I actually wish I could go back in time 3 – 5 years when the software was actually better. I’m not saying there aren’t significant improvements. I just would rather go back to a much older (in software time) user experience.
I would literally rather use any other tool’s sidebar—Wrike, ClickUp, Monday, etc.
I’m glad this worked for you. I was quite relieved when I was able to restore everything to the previous workflow with some effort. I’m golden moving forward now.
Now let’s all hope they don’t remove this feature from us too.

They claim to “hear” us, but it’s evident they don’t. Their failures have left us deeply disappointed. For years now, as users, we have been disregarded and our voices ignored. Asana seems more interested in creating superficial visual elements like flying unicorns in their user interface, neglecting the fact that this is not a mere game. We rely on their product to propel our businesses forward, yet our pleas for a basic alphabetical sorting feature in projects have fallen on deaf ears. They have not only failed to implement the requested feature but have completely removed any possibility of sorting projects altogether. Asana, is this what you consider listening?
People here are using this App for WORK and BUSINESS, and you can’t throw away a basic feature just to “refresh the branding” and waste our time and work proficiency. I just started to look around for Asana alternatives…
Any news? I’m terrified that nothing happened since May! And I just got this crazy update without being able to go back or choose whether or not we want to change to this terrible new layout!
I finally had to upgrade my desktop app and am now subjected to the new sidebar. I loathe it. We track multiple projects (far more than 10) and now I’ve had to go and star every single one and have removed the projects tab entirely from the sidebar. I am beyond annoyed and our administrator is now looking for alternative software. It will be a pain to migrate everything to a software but not as much of a pain as getting my co-workers to star every single project themselves and then continuing to labouriously curate their own view as new projects are added and older projects are finished, instead of having a single admin curate this by sorting projects and archiving finished ones.
