I think there is something fundamentally wrong with the Board View… If I create a list or a timeline or a Calendar the segmentation of the section still makes sense, however in Board View it’s just not usable.
In my mind, I picture a task that will be traveling from Left (Backlog) to right (Complete) with each task being able to be split in sections. But right now, my definition of sections on List and Timeline doesn’t add up in the board view.
I think this is something that they could improve on and they can even take it 1 step further by allowing user to define the X and Y axis so to speak.
Hi @Hakim_C_Indriawan essentially board view is for ongoing process style projects with as you said left to right moving. Essentially if you want different sections with different views you would need separate projects.
Has there been any progress in addressing this requirement, please?
I have a similar need to use a Board to manage a team’s workload day-to-day and a Gantt Chart to show the bigger picture to senior stakeholders. I need different sections for each view, for example:
Board view:
To Do
In Progress
Done
Gantt Chart:
Workstream 1, 2, 3, etc.
Project Stage 1, 2, 3, etc.
Is this something that Asana can take on board as a user requirement? It seems a pretty fundamental project management capability.
@James_Cooper2 - welcome to the forum! This is (partially) doable in Asana thanks to a semi-recent update that allowed you to change your board columns.
What you can do
Use sections for grouping related work in the Gantt and use the “Group By” option in board view to group by status (create a custom single-select field for this)
What you can’t do
Swimlanes in board view (e.g., group by status in columns and by assignee in “rows”/swimlanes) and multiple groupings in Gantt (e.g., have a task belong to your Workstream and Stage example, it is just grouped by its section)
You’ve anticipated my next question: when can we get swim lanes for Assignee, please? Again, this is a really fundamental capability for taking an overview of the team’s workload, managing stand ups etc.
In the meantime, specifically for viewing workload (and aiding standups), you could try out the workload reporting if you’re on a paid tier. We use that with pretty decent success.
