Creating Sections for Custom Fields

What are the issues:

  1. Multihoming: When tasks are added on more than one project there’s a lot of custom fields that get added onto the tasks.
  2. Data Tracking: We’d like to establish better reports and dashboards within Asana so implementing more custom fields for data tracking is crucial; however, with so many custom fields, task organization is harder to manage and tasks become overwhelmingly long and difficult to read at a glance. If sections were introduced, teams from different departments could key in easily on where to look for information and where to input their work for a task.

What if we could have options to add sections to organize custom fields - that would add another level of organization on a task level. Examples for Custom Field Sections in our company: Project Information, Production Information, Revenue Data, Misprint Details.

I think it’d be very useful - coming from a B2B/Decoration Company to have these sections for organizing custom fields in the case of multihoming, utilizing dashboards/reporting, as well as increasing buy-in and task engagement across our company.

I agree. I do not know if this is an existing topic, but I voted here.

To clarify, you’re proposing better organization for custom fields specifically on the task slideout panel that would let you group (and perhaps hide/collapse groups of fields) those fields, right?

It’s a great suggestion and I’ve also given it a vote. In the meantime, for certain use cases (e.g., if you are multi-homing to projects for different teams that do/don’t ever use certain fields), a partial solution might be to use permissions on the individual fields to effectively hide them from different groups (this only works if those groups never need to use that field, so it’s definitely only solving for a small subset of use cases).

For what it’s worth, this appears to be currently in development:

Note that @Stephen_Li’s great workaround (using the private fields feature) is exclusive to Enterprise tiers.
