Different Custom Fields for Different Sections within the Same Project

Is there a possibility to have different custom fields assigned to different sections within the same Asana project?

For example, a project may have multiple sections representing different stages or workstreams, where each section requires its own set of relevant custom fields.

Example:

  • Section 1 – Engineering Requests
    • Request Type
    • Engineering Discipline
    • Priority
    • Due Date
  • Section 2 – Document Review
    • Document Type
    • Revision
    • Reviewer
    • Review Status
  • Section 3 – Project Delivery
    • Project Stage
    • Responsible Team
    • Approval Status
    • Completion Date

Currently, custom fields are generally available across the project, which can result in unnecessary fields being displayed for tasks in sections where they are not relevant.

It would be useful if Asana could support section-level custom fields, so each section can have its own applicable fields while still remaining within the same project.

This would make projects cleaner, reduce unnecessary fields, and improve usability for complex workflows.

I do have a similar issue occasionally. What I tend to do is create a view per section only showing the fields and sections that I want.

Until/if Asana addresses this exact request, a workaround is:

Only add custom fields in this project that apply to tasks in any section.

Create one project corresponding to each section and add the unique custom fields to each project.

Add a rule:

  • When: task moved to section
  • If: Branching condition for every section
  • Action: multi-home task to project corresponding to that section.

You’ll get the outcome you’re looking for, albeit with some extra initial setup and complexity.

Thanks,

Larry
