Coming soon: Asana redesign to help you find what you need quickly and easily

We’ve been using the new sidebar for a while and in general my team seems to like it.

One piece of functionality I have been missing though: it used to be that I could right-click on a project in the sidebar and open it in a new tab. This was useful during some of our planning sessions when I wanted to review what was currently in-flight against priority candidates, for example.

Since the right-click now shows a menu specific to the project, I can’t do this anymore. I would love if y’all could add an “Open project in new tab” option to that right-click menu to enable this navigation again. I’ve ended up using the “Copy project link” option, manually opening a new tab, and pasting that link in, but having a built-in option to do this would be handy.

@Sassafras On our workspace, I can right-click on a project on the sidebar, and there is an option to “Open in a new tab.” There is a good chance that it’s on the testing phase, and they haven’t rolled that out to all workspaces.

Hi @Sassafras , in case you are using a mouse with a middle-button, on most browsers if you middle-click on any linked item, it will open the link in a new tab. This is quicker than using right click and choosing open in new tab.

Same applies to holding down ⌘ (or Control on a PC) when you left click for most scenarios like this if you don’t have a middle button.

I look forward to trying this. Thank you!

Is this available ot everyone now? How do I activate the redesign?

Not quite yet @Koen_Bal, we’re still in the process of testing it via A/B tests. It will be pushed to all customers automatically once it’s ready to go

When will the new sidebar functionality be available? Our team still does not have it.

Hi Marie, perhaps I missed this but when I read your initial post and the linked explainer on Asana guides, I saw no mention that this was still in A/B testing or when rollout may happen.

Would love any info you can share so we can prep our teams for the change.
Thanks!!

Hi Marie, I am liking the new sidebar, and being able to resize it. Will there be any chance being able to resize the details pane also? When working on a laptop, trying to work side by side with another window, I often can’t see enough of the task list and would prefer the details pane to be narrower as the contents can reflow.

This is quite a long time for the roll-out or a/b testing of this feature. It’s almost 3 months since this was introduced in this thread. Is there any hint of when it will be available to all? @Marie

How come I don’t see the new redesigned sidebar. Do I need to e-install and re-install ASana?

See a few posts above:

Thank you for the reply.
Looking forward to playing with it.

The sidebar redesign is awful nd has ruined my workflow. Please bring back the old version where we could sort and scroll.

Welcome, @Angela_Davies1,

You replied to me, but just so it’s clear, I don’t work at Asana; I’m just an Asana consultant.

Your feedback here will be seen by Asana, though in my experience, it’s unlikely they’ll bring back the old version.

If you haven’t already seen it, this post may provide some workarounds:

Thanks,

Larry

I understand you are trying to grow and improve your product, but a recent change has just made my life using Asana a nightmare. Please make an option to go back to the way things were.
I am begging you to please put my sidebar experience back if you are able. We have many clients and each has a few boards and I need to be able to have fast, frequent access to all of them. I flip back and forth many times a minute even.
This change, for me, is counter productive and makes my work flow and work experience confusing and cumbersome.
Also did you guys give notice? Just changing someone’s work life like that so abruptly is disorienting. My work life was literally upended.
You should at the very least, give people, especially existing users, the choice on how to view.
You really can’t even imagine how negatively this has effected my day to day.

Hi @Khris_Ramella

From an Asana user to an Asana user.

Even though for me, the new sidebar has improved my daily life (more space, easier to scroll a long list of projects), I sympathize fully, and I understand that this change can be unsettling (I’m still shaken by the Asana colors change a few years ago…).

Personally, I tend to make use of the Chrome tabs to switch between multiple projects (ex: if you use the “CTRL + click” shortcut, you can easily open multiple tabs to define your playground and work from there).
example :

chrome-capture-2023-4-16 (1)

Also, I would suggest you read this very good guide written by @Richard_Sather. Meanwhile, an eventual “switch to the old version button”, it may help you get used to this feature.

All the best
