I have the Asana desktop app as downloaded via my company’s Self Service tool (we can’t download any tools on our own). I am now unable to set the preferences in my Asana to open with my desktop app instead of in-browser. How do I fix this?
The settings say to download the desktop app, but I already have it.

Hi @Rachel_Hazen,
Apologies for the inconvenience.
A few quick things to try:
-
Make sure you’re signed into the same Asana account in both the browser and desktop app, then refresh the browser page.
-
In the web app, go to Profile photo → Profile settings → Apps and try toggling Open links in desktop app (if available).
-
Restart the desktop app, then try opening a task link again.
If the web app still shows “download the desktop app”:
This usually means the desktop app protocol isn’t registered or may be blocked by IT.
-
Windows: Check Settings → Apps → Default apps → Choose defaults by protocol, then make sure ASANA is assigned to the Asana app.
-
Mac: Try reinstalling the desktop app, or ask IT to push the latest version and confirm the asana:// protocol is allowed.
If it’s still not working, I’d recommend looping in your IT team to reinstall or update the desktop app, especially if you’re using a managed device.
