Allow Board view columns to be associated to a custom field's options, similar to sorted sections in List view

is it possible to group the columns of a kanban based on other fields like a custom field or status… then save that as an alternative view?

Hi @Keith_Schuster, thanks for reaching out!

At this time, it’s not possible to automatically tie Board columns to custom fields. We do have an existing thread for this feature request in the #productfeedback category so I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with the existing one to consolidate feedback.

I’ll keep you posted and let you know if I have any updates

What is the latest update about it?
The lack of this feature forced us to go to ClickUp or Monday. It’s crucial together with proper text editors across the application.

We have the same need for our team, where we use the sections for our goals/departments and still want to have a board that can be grouped by status.
We cannot replace the sections with status, because our team lists still need the list view where sections include tasks ordered manually by priority.
Every option with rules automation we tried either breaks or is too complicated for all of our team members to understand and is a unnecessary workaround for this simple feature.

@Shneor1 no news. You couldn’t use the List view instead?

As a user I’d like to choose a custom field as the columns of the board instead of forcing the sections as the columns.

I would then have the freedom to create a board where each column is a “user”, a “client” a “product line” a “sprint” or any other custom field I’d like to separate the columns by.

Additionally, as a user I’d like to be able to designate swim lanes for grouping, so I can also vertically separate tasks by section or “status”, or any other field.

As a user I’d like to save these column and swim lane choices as saved views so I can quickly switch between views.

This is a basic feature in Jira and is a key productivity pain point for users switching to Asana.

Hi @anon89508656, Wwhile this feature isn’t available at this time, hopefully it’s something our Product team can implement in the future

Just jumping in with our excitement for this feature.

Yes, let us choose what creates a column in board view and let use choose a custom field. We all use statuses and then reports based on statuses.

But we can’t use the board view and lots of teams prefer board view vs list view.

This is the most annoying feature of Asana for me. Please please please do something

Exactly! Clickup has it too! Essential for KanBan (status) boards!

cant believe this feature is not supported. even airtable can do this!

Currently your Board view is unfortunately missing a key feature. I desperately need to be able to set the columns to be one of my custom fields and NOT the default “Section”. The fixed setting to “Section” is very limiting. This upgrade would significantly improve the value and use of Asana for our teams. As I’m sure you would understand, by doing this it would allow a true Kanban view which your site cannot currently do. It must be possible to have a Timeline view and Kanban view (aka custom Board columns). Please help. This would be a relatively easy upgrade for your team.

I’ve merged your post into a thread that already exists; please click the title to scroll to the top and vote with the purple Vote button.

Nice one, @lpb , I was about to do the same.
I think we should also merge this one here too:

and this one too?

What do you think?

Thank you kindly. Done.

I have to ask… 5 years later seems an unusually long time for an essential feature. Why the wait?

@Richard_Sather, Sure, have at it!

@mark63, I don’t work at Asana and can’t give a definitive answer about this specific feature, but in general they have written here about their process, which is a well-thought-out one, even if we all wish our requests were prioritized more highly!

Thanks,

Larry

This would allow users to set (and change as required) standard workflows across multiple projects as they see fit without the need to use multiple unnecessary rules every time a new project is created. In my opinion this is how sections / board columns should have been implemented in the first place. The flexibility and ease of use would have been amazing.

Thanks for sharing this @Tim_Jasper! I think this could be a very good option :+1: we currently don’t have plans to launch a similar feature but I’ll make sure to keep this thread updated if you have any news!

+1. Sections don’t always correlate with boards. In fact, it’s more powerful if they don’t – otherwise what’s the point? It’s the same information just laid out differently.

Perhaps the most important benefit of implementing this feature is that you could then set up a project quickly using a pre-existing dynamic custom field. (more powerful than a static template)

Also you could change the board view by selecting a different custom field. eg
Status: to do, doing, done.
Progress: 20%,40%,60% etc
Review: Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3

Currently if you want to view the same tasks in different columns layouts you’d have to add them to 3 different projects and manually add each column group to each project.

Also if a task was in multiple projects its column ‘status’ would be updated immediately in each project. I agree strongly with @Joe_Moran that a project’s list sections seldom have anything to do with a board status. Using custom fields/fields would allow you to set a list section to one custom field and the board to another. Indeed with this setup you wouldn’t even need sections in lists - you could just sort by the custom field.
