Notion is doing this right and it should be a no-brainer to provide this to professional Asana users.
In general, the way we can filter tasks is extremly limited.
e.g. I can either filter by my tasks OR the Due date Today. Not both?
We are in 2020 and a proper database management in such a great tool as Asana is, should be standard!
Sections are a good way to break down projects however you want without nesting tasks->subtasks->sub sub tasks which can be difficult to easily parse when viewing projects. Teams have the flexibility to break down the sections depending on what is best for the project. Unfortunately, the Section titles map directly to the titles of the swimlanes which get created in the Board view, and i think Board has 10/10 potential to be used for Kanban workflows, but does not work in reality unless you set up your Sections in the List view to mirror a Kanban view.
The request is essentially to allow for decoupling the Board view from inheriting the names of the Sections defined in the List view
I’ve merged your post into an existing thread I created earlier on the same topic where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the purple Vote button.
The fact that Asana allows a task to be in a “Completed” column in my personal board but still in the “To do” column of the project is weird but I can see how that may make sense in some scenarios.
However, the fact that there is no out-of-the-box way to make a task that is in “Completed” in my personal task board move to the “Completed” section in its project blows my mind and is extremely frustrating. I will switch to Jira, which also has several other features I need and will make my life easier.
I appreciate that Jira may have some extra features that you need, but please be aware that Asana does provide a way out-of-the-box (for Premium and above plans) add a rule to any project to move a completed task to a Completed section (and vice versa):
Thanks for your reply. I see that rule and it only helps partially.
As far as I can tell, a task can be
Completed
AND in the “In Progress” section in my personal task board
AND in the “To do” section in project A
AND in the “Prioritized” section in project B
at the same time and as far as I can tell, there is no way to sync that, which obviously is the perfect recipe for total chaos.
If there’s a way to address this problem, please let me know.
Yes, add the rule I mentioned to each of My Tasks, Project A, and Project B.
It may not be helpful to you, but I know many other use cases where the behavior you ask for is undesirable, so it’s left up to each workflow/project to implement the automation desired.
Sorry, I didn’t express what I want clearly. My apologies. Let me try again:
Not only do I want completed tasks to be moved the the “Completed” section in the project, but I also want tasks in the “In Progress” section on a user’s personal task board to be moved to the “In Progress” section of any project that the task is in.
I just replied to your Flowsana support ticket but thought I would reply here as well.
Flowsana doesn’t currently have any functionality to do this automatically. It’s an interesting idea and one that has been suggested before. In fact, we have a portal for product suggestions and it’s in there and can be upvoted: Move Task to Same Section in All Projects · Flowsana Feedback
The basic “problem” with the ability to do the sync you’re asking for is that in the Asana data architecture, sections are a local object that exists only at the individual project level. That is, a section called “In Progress” in one project is a completely different object and unrelated to a section called “In Progress” in another project. Those two sections, which happen to have the same name, know nothing about each other. In contrast, a custom field that lives in the organization fields library is universal across projects and this is why it’s the standard way to “connect” sections in different projects. But of course, that workaround is more involved and awkward than if there were a direct connection between sections (or if columns could be associated with a custom field as this forum thread is proposing, which is an alternate way to achieve a similar end).
thanks for getting back to me - I appreciate it! I used to be a software engineer and I understand that in Asana’s data model, a section is local to a project and not an attribute of a task. The same goes for the order of tasks, which is also local to every project as well as to my personal task board.
I am trying to use Asana as a Kanban board that allows me to have tasks in multiple projects and to then have a single Kanban board that allows me to prioritize my tasks across all projects I’m involved with. I think both a task’s status and the order of tasks should be consistent across all projects and personal task boards.
From that perspective, I strongly disagree with Asana’s data model and I therefore came to the conclusion that Asana is not the best tool for my specific use case. I spent all day yesterday migrating all my Asana projects and tasks to Jira and I completely abandoned Asana. Jira manages a task’s status as an attribute of a task (issue in Jira) that has a one-to-many relationship with columns (sections) in boards, which is configured using a very intuitive and simple UI that allows me to drag and drop statuses into a board’s column. It also maintains tasks’ ordering in a global Rank attribute on the tasks, which can be used to consistently order tasks throughout boards. This solution works well for me and I’m able to do everything I need in a free Jira Cloud site without any plugins or external services.
I have a use case to create “custom” kanban boards in a project versus boards automatically being generated based on the “sections” in Asana. The user wants to create kanban boards based on various fields on a project task and save these views in the project. The issue we have today is if we add a field to the kanban board, it adds that as a section in the main List. This is not desirable, nor does it resolve the issue.
A competing product provides this functionality in a very elegant user interface allowing the user to create a variety of kanban boards based on any fields on a task to organize various views.
Hi @Erica_Shahinian-Mill , welcome to the forum
This is a sought out feature (for me to!) so I’m merging your post into this existing thread where you can add your vote using the purple button at the top of this thread.
