Advanced Search Showing Subtasks Without Assigned Projects Due to Parent Task’s Project

I am experiencing an issue with the Advanced Search feature in Asana. My goal is to filter tasks by a specific “project” to see only tasks that are explicitly assigned to that project. However, I’m encountering an unexpected behavior where subtasks without any project assigned in their own “project” field are still appearing in the search results. This happens because their parent task is assigned to the project I am searching for.

Expected Behavior:

  • When I search for tasks with a specific “project” assigned, I expect the search results to only show tasks (including subtasks) that have that specific project explicitly assigned in their “project” field.
  • Subtasks without a project assigned to them should not appear in the search results, even if their parent task is part of the selected project.

Current Behavior:

  • The Advanced Search displays all tasks within the selected project, including subtasks that do not have any project assigned to them.
  • These subtasks appear in the results solely because their parent tasks are assigned to the selected project, even though the subtasks themselves have an empty “project” field.

Additional Notes:

  • Other filters and settings do not affect this issue.
  • This issue specifically impacts subtasks that lack a project assignment, not all tasks.

I would appreciate any guidance or a solution that would allow the Advanced Search to exclude subtasks without a project assignment, aligning with the selected project criteria.

Note: Not a solution but marked as such to elevate a key reply

Until/if Asana addresses this (I voted too), you can use this workaround.

Choose this Add filter menu item:

That will add this parameter to your search:

First search for Not subtasks to find all parent tasks in the project.

Then change to Subtasks only and search again, and sort the results by Project to bring the subtasks that are actually members of the project (not inherited into the project) to the top.

I wish it were easier!

Thanks,

Larry

Thank you for the reply and vote! Appreciate your attention :green_heart:

As You understand its not a solution, but can help someone!

With bulk work it’s looks the same as scrolling and ignoring projects with monkey job and eye filter by myself
