Add "Create subtask" as an Action for Rules

I know there’s a feedback thread about creating rules for subtasks but I think what I am asking is different.

In my specific use-case, I would like to create this rule for top-level tasks:

  • Trigger: Task moved to section “ABC”
  • Action: Create subtask called “XYZ” and assign it to me

Hi @Justine_D – you can do this fairly easily with Zapier. Happy to connect if it’s helpful. :zap:

Is there a function that allows subtasks to automatically be created once a task has either been completed or moved to a certain section ?

We use asana as a lead intake/CRM. There are certain tasks we’d like to create once the project has moved to “Sold”.

Thanks for any help!

Brit

Hi @Brit_Foshee, thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback!

It’s not possible to automatically create subtasks in Asana at this time. We do have an existing request for this feature in the forum already so I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with the existing one to consolidate feedback - I hope you don’t mind!

I’ll let you know if I have any updates

I’ll look into it, thanks! I always prefer native Rules in Asana, because they are (a) more visible to the whole team and (b) more efficient, in that you don’t have to train people to use two different platforms.

This is easy to do via a rule in our Flowsana integration.

Hello @Justine_D,

it is now possible to create subtasks via rules:

Hi all :wave:t2: I’m excited to announce a new Rule action: “Add subtasks” :tada:

With this update, the Rule creator will be able to compile a list of subtasks to be added to a task when the chosen trigger is set off.

I hope you all love this update as much as I do  Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hi @anon84034686, thanks for reaching out! We’re still rolling this feature out and expect it to be available to all eligible users by Nov 24. If you don’t have this feature yet, you will soon! :clock1:

Yay, a first small step in the right direction.
Now we just need rules in general to be able to interact with subtasks.

I think this was actually the feature request at the beginning of this post (at least it was what i upvoted for), so I’m pretty disappointed with this update :pensive:

Hi @Rebecca_McGrath - I think the rollout of Asana Rule actions to create subtasks is not what this feature request was for. This feature request was a request to allow rules to apply to subtasks (currently rules only work on parent tasks).

So, even though it’s exciting that we can now create subtasks using rules, rules still can’t be triggered by subtasks. So, I’m still hoping for this feature to be considered and developed by Asana.

Does that make sense? Hopefully I’m explaining myself (but maybe not).

Hey, @Rebecca_McGrath! We’re excited over here for this update, but we wanted to clarify: when you say “to all eligible users”, is this feature going to be available anywhere below Enterprise level? Thanks!

Exactly, we need that rules be triggered by subtasks.

FYI our Flowsana integration now support automation of subtasks in a variety of ways. For more info, see

That indeed is a nice new feature in order to automatize certain steps, especially when certain custom fields might trigger new needs to be carried out.

I’m still on the wait for the original feature suggested here tough!! We’re in the right path!

Keep it comin’

Hi @KatieRose_Postelle, great question! The “Add subtasks” action will be available to all users who have a Business plan and can build custom Rules.

Hi all :wave:t2:

Quick update! We have started rolling this feature out to users now and all users should have access to this new Rule action by November 22  :tada:
