We are using Asana in a way that labels tasks as “Features” or “Tasks/Stories” using a custom field “task_type”. I’m trying to find a way when a subtask is created for a “Feature” task (those marked with the custom task_type field = “Feature”), the subtask has the task_type field set to “Story”, AND the subtask is also included in the same project the parent task is in. Right now when a user creates a subtask under the main task, the subtask is not associated with the project board. We have to go back into the subtask and manually add it to the project (so it appears on the board), and also assign the task_type field to “Story”.
I can’t find a way in the rules to reference any information regarding the parent task or its properties.
Is this possible?
Thanks.

That’s currently impossible sadly. When a rule runs on a subtask, it has no access to the parent task.
I’m getting this question A LOT from my clients.
They want rules that can make a change to the Parent task from the Subtask. EG, If subtask field changes, also change the same field in parent task.
FYI you can do this with rules in our Flowsana integration; see this forum post for more info.
Note that this is a little simpler than what the OP in this thread is asking for - he needs more interaction between the parent and subtask which Flowsana can’t currently do, either (for example, he needs to set a certain custom field value on the subtask depending on a value in a custom field in the parent).

@Phil_Seeman Thanks for the tip & quick response! I was just talking to my client today about the growing need to consider Flowsana, and here’s 1 more reason! Hah!
