So we don’t leave things until the last minute, could we add a reminder field, or set an notification within Asana / email to inbox to remind X days before the task is due? Nothing like a task being due and only just remembering on the day but not having the time or capacity to do it.

You can already achieve this now with the help of rules.
Here is an example:
As rule trigger you can have “Due date is approaching”
Then select your preferred upcoming due date
And as trigger you can have a comment posted for example.
You can customize this trigger to also tag people directly, such as the task creator, assignee, etc
