Support quotes and wildcard in Search function

I mean that it should find the search term as “contains” without having to go to “advanced search”

Gentlemen’s, this is a useful idea, at least in the form of a separate search filter, it would be very nice to add

Wildcard and searching for phrases would make this so much better to search

Briefly describe (1-2 sentences) the Bug you’re experiencing: searching for tasks that contain a word does not work if that word is not separated by spaces.

Steps to reproduce: have task(s) that contain a key word not separated by spaces. Eg: task is “Planning_Experiment01” and I search for “Experiment01”.
If the task is named “Planning_ Experiment01”, the search for “Experiment01” returns the desired task.

Hi @anon94767895, welcome to the Asana Community Forum :wave:t2:

I can confirm that this is not a bug but expected behaviour right now.

While our Product team is aware of this, I don’t have a timeline to share with you at the moment when this would updated.

As we do gather feedback like yours to show the importance of certain features, I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with an existing request to consolidate feedback.

I’ll keep you posted!

This request is over 4 years old now!

I have arrived here searching for Wildcard search and it seems it’s a feature requested long time ago and still not resolved, really?

This is totally ridiculous. Please fix.

Hello Team Asana,

Search strings with AND, OR operators should be incorporated

Oct’2022 and still waiting.
Its really becoming frustrating that the developers are working on upgrades/improvements to Asana but are leaving the basic’s behind.

Hello @Marie ,

I would like to encourage Asana to fix this behaviour.
It’s been four years since this has been suggested.

Advanced search is much less useful (for me) if I cannot find partial matches in specific text fields.

In Polish language every word can exist in 50 different forms. Not having a search engine for partial words is like not having a search engine at all.

Our company uses Asana for over 4 years, and this is the biggest problem with Assana right now, which make us want to switch to another product. We can’t find anything!

Wildcard searches would be really nice. Just sayin!

I didn’t realize this was an issue in search… the search is based on a whole word match? To match on all tasks related to a topic, whether singular or plural would require 2 separate searches? And to view them in one view, it’d require finding them all and assigning a common tag (which can’t be auto-assigned to new tasks created via a form)?

Multiple user workflow issues  , which would be really great to have answers to. :upside_down_face:

Please fix this soon!

While partial search does work for text in the search preview, it doesn’t work for partial numbers.

In our situation, we have automatic task numbering set up in the task name. So a task will be named like (e.g.) “#00736 - 6006617 PIN HINGE”. We recently added the leading zeros to all our tasks (i.e. #00736 instead of #736) because otherwise we couldn’t sort by number or it would show up as #1, #10#2, #20 etc.

However, we have now found that searching for “736” will not show any results, either in the full search or in the preview. We will only get results if we search “00736”. This has been causing issues for people saying they can’t find tasks they’ve submitted.

Searching for part of the drawing number (e.g. “6617”) also doesn’t return any results, either in the preview or full search.

Please fix this soon. It’s currently a glaring lack of functionality.

Bumping this thread to see if they’ve yet implemented the ability to use quotes or any other method to merge together words separated by spaces into a single search term. A search for “John James Smith” currently returns every record containing “John”, every record containing “James”, and every record containing “Smith” so that the number of records returned can be thousands of times greater than the expected amount. The lack of this feature with large datasets renders Asana almost useless.

6 years later…

HOW is it possible for a project management software to NOT have a FUZZY SEARCH

FFS my terminal does a better text search than this.

Wow. I’m new to Asana and loving most of it, but there are some very obvious features that just make it a pain . This is top of my list, we have automated the creation of hundreds of project form templates and are now finding the limits and ability to create advanced searched using wildcard if very annoying. Wasting hour of your users time is a sure fire was to annoy, and then to have a thread like this open for this many years and no progress… :frowning:

Yes, please! I struggle with finding tasks that have a specific phrase. I get back results that have any of the phrase words or any combination of the phrase words in the results. It would be a big time saver to be able to search for specific phrases.
Desired Result: Searching “Start time changed” would only return tasks that have those 3 words in that order. Please and Thank you.

Another vote for “exact text” searches, wildcards, and AND/OR solutions!
