Subtasks rules to assign new assignees?

Is it possible to setup rules for subtasks that, once the subtask is completed, it automatically assigns the next subtask to the new assignee? I envisioned the subtasks not having a designated assignee initially, then once the previous subtask is marked complete, an assignee is then assigned the next subtask in order. Could this be done through Dependencies? I don’t quite understand how those work.

Thanks all!

@Christopher_J_Norris,

You can have rules for subtasks, but not exactly what you’re describing.

You’re on the right track with Dependencies. You could make Subtask 2 dependent on Subtask 1 and go ahead and give it an assignee early on. It would be up to the assignee to note that it’s blocked and manage that in their My Tasks view; they could move it into a collapsed “Later” section assuming the keep a simple permanent rule in their My Tasks:

  • Trigger: Task is unblocked
  • Action: Move to “Today” (or similar) section

Hope that helps,

Larry

Thanks Larry! When you say “Manage it in the My Tasks view” does that mean they filter by blocked tasks so they don’t see them? I like the idea of a Later/Today section, and I’m just looking for the best way to explain this to my team.

Thanks, @Christopher_J_Norris.

Managing in My Tasks is described in this article (which also links to the Asana documentation):

Basically it’s sections, manual triage, and automatic triage using rules including the one I mentioned.

Let me know if anything is unclear there.

Thanks,

Thanks @lpb! So helpful. Would you ever be willing to take a look at my Asana project I’m referencing and provide feedback or suggestions based around the triggers and rules I have setup?

@Christopher_J_Norris,

I offer a “JumpStart”–a consulting hour–at Trilogi Solutions for individual work; the free articles, videos, app, and answers here are directed more broadly.

Thanks,

Larry
