Subtasks appearing in project board without using "Add to projects" action

Hi all!

My team has recently set up a new project board and added some rules to help move things along, but are running into issues with a rule that creates a subtask.

I’ve set up a rule in a project board that runs when a task status has been updated to a specific one. This is what it is currently set to do:

  • The task will move the task into that section within the project board
  • The task’s due date will update relative to when it was triggered
  • A subtask will be created and assigned to a specific teammate every time. The subtask due date is set to be whatever the due date for the parent task is.

The issue: When this rule runs, it also adds the subtask to my project board which we do not want to happen as it is causing a lot of confusion with the team. There is nothing in the rule settings that shows the subtask being created should be added to our project board.

I understand that, at the core, subtasks are still tasks, however, I have never had this happen where they populate a project board. This leads me to think that I have maybe set something up incorrectly in the rule settings or that there are potentially other settings I am not aware of at the project level.

I have looked in the rule settings and there is nothing within the subtask that shows it should be added to the project board. Is there a place for task/subtask inheritance settings that this issue could be stemming from?

A couple of additional details that may/may not be helpful:

  • Our team has the Enterprise plan
  • We are all using the desktop app on Apple computers

Thanks in advance for any info or solutions anyone here might be able to offer!

Welcome, @Blaire_Wilson1,

Is there any chance your rule has “Run on subtasks” toggled on? If so, I believe that’s the culprit. Change it to this:

Thanks,

Woah! Larry, you’re my hero.
I know this seems really simple, but this was driving our team crazy

We work so quickly that statuses change so often and there are several rules that create new subtasks, so our board was filling up fast!

Thank you so much, Larry. THIS IS THE ANSWER

Great to hear, @Blaire_Wilson1!

This is not simple at all and only because I’ve seen it before did it seem so.

Glad we were able to stave off some problems quickly!
