Sorting order of due dates: "Date + time" should take precedence over "Date"

Adding another vote to fix this bug. Would really be helpful and seems like it should be an easy enough fix.

When I add a time to tasks, instead of appearing at the top of the list for the specific day as you would expect, it sits at the bottom. :man_shrugging:

There are only specific tasks that I would assign a time to, most likely because there is a deadline to complete it by during the day, you would expect these tasks to appear first in the list. It makes no logical sense for a task without a time associated (these can be completed anytime time before end of day) to appear in a list above a task with a time assigned to it (these must be completed by a specific time during the day).

So first of all, this logic should be added.

But assuming it isn’t added, the only work around I can think of is to assign an end of day due time to all tasks (for example 6pm) and then allow me to assign specific tasks with an earlier time in the day.

So the question is, how can I set a default time for every task to be able to achieve this?

When due dates are sorted and displayed by date, they will look like this.

1 Date
2 Date 08:00
3 Date 15:00

Personally, I would like the time specification to be displayed first.

1 Date 08:00
2 Date 15:00
3 Date

In the inbox, the “date + time” will be displayed above the “date”.

I agree, and I’ve wondered about this. If something needs to be done at a specific time rather than just somewhere on the day it is due earlier, so sorting it as you suggest makes more sense.

If something needs to happen before a specific time today, it makes no sense to me to sort these above things that just need to happen today but have no specific time.

The effect it has on me is often:

sigh, I’ll get rid of the due date sort and sort it by hand …

Come on Asana, this is getting a bit ridiculous that this issue which you’ve acknowledged as a bug has being in existence and not addressed for 4 years. It’s such a fundamental part of task management and the engineering fix can surely not be all that difficult particularly if you started with just the My Task page which I’m sure would go a long way to helping alot of people.

Please let’s get this fixed

Asana Developers,

Any update on this bug? Hoping by me posting this bumps this back to the top of their message queue lol.

Could Asana please fix this?

Hi everyone,

Since this thread was originally started in 2021, a few different issues have been mixed together. I’ve consulted with our Engineers to clarify how things stand today:

  • Original sorting Bug: There was a bug reported years ago where date sorting wasn’t working at all (e.g., today appearing after tomorrow). That specific issue is no longer happening.
  • Current sorting logic: Right now, the system sorts tasks by date, and then by time. This means that tasks with a due time currently show up below tasks with no due time. This is the current state of the feature rather than a bug.

Our Developers are aware of the feedback regarding this logic. While we hope to refine how time affects the sort order in the future, we don’t have a specific timeline for changes right now.

To make this thread easier to follow, I’m doing a bit of clean up: I’m removing old comments related to the original bug, updating the topic title, and merging newer related threads so all your votes are consolidated in one place.

If there’s any movement on this feature request in the future, we’ll be sure to share the updates.

Thank you for your patience!

Hi everyone,

I’ve checked with our Engineers, and they confirmed that the system currently sorts tasks by date, and then by time. That is why tasks with a due time show up below tasks with no due time. This feedback is on our team’s radar, but we don’t have an ETA for any updates to this behavior just yet.

I’ve also done some cleanup on the original feedback thread (Sorting order of due dates: "Date + time" should take precedence over "Date" - #30 by Jan-Rienk). It was mixing an old bug report (which is no longer happening) with this current sorting behavior, so I’ve separated them to keep the focus on this as a feature request.

@ka_nishiyama, if it’s okay with you, I’d like to merge your topic into that original thread to consolidate the votes. I’ll also use your title for the main thread since it makes the request much clearer. Let me know!

Thank you!

Hi @Vanessa_N

I agree to the merging and other processes you have provided.
Thank you.

I would argue that this is a bug in understanding, rather than the code.

From a programming perspective, I get it. Today started at midnight last night. And it’s likely that engineering can claim they built exactly according to specifications.

But I’d contend there isn’t a user that thinks like that. And it is also inconsistent with what Asana considers “overdue”.

I’m hoping Asana will consider expanding what classifies as a bug.
