Sort Individual Board Columns

It would be helpful to apply different sorts to different board columns.

To give context, I use my Asana boards as Kanban boards with columns like Backlog, To Do, In Progress, Done, etc. It’s helpful to see items in To Do by date, which your board sort currently does. Unfortunately, sorting the Backlog, In Progress, and Done by date doesn’t make the most sense, and right now it’s all-or-nothing.

There could be 2 ways to solve this issue:

  1. Allow specific sorting per column instead of the entire board.
    OR
  2. Have an option to sort everything manually but then from there you are still free to move things around with drag-and-drop, the way you can when no sort is enabled.

I doubly think this would be helpful. In the situation where you have a SCRUM board the completed column would be best updated on “Last Updated” or a “Completed” field while everything else should be due date.

It seems like sorting within sections was launched, but not for boards. Since filtering is also limited (How to filter by a field with no value - #5 by Lauren_Briskin1) and it’s a cumbersome to find a specific task in a long column, this would be a very useful feature.

@Maya I agree individual column sorting would be quite useful for process/continuous workflows!

How I’m thinking about using this:

  • New - sorted by created date, oldest on top
  • Prioritised - sorted manually, most important on top
  • In progress - sorted manually, most important on top
  • Rejected - sorted by completion date, most recent on top
  • Done - sorted by completion date, most recent on top

Ideally this’d work with all available grouping options.

@Maya I took the liberty to adjust the title to make it about the individual column sorting options only as that seems your primary request, and is in line with the other comments in this topic.

Can you make a separate feedback post for the sorting override if you still want this? That way it’s clearer what people are voting for, or what exactly Asana is marking considered / in-development / launched if it does end up with one of those labels.

PS: Personally, I fear override sort would be confusing, and linkely hard to implement technically. So I also think the individual column sort has the best chance of being implemented.

I think of it working like a spreadsheet does. You can sort your data, but then you can still move around your rows after the fact.

Rather than a persistent sort, it would be how sorting things work in real life. Imagine you sort your shirts in a closet by color. Then imagine after doing so you physically couldn’t move one shirt to another position. That’d be some weird physics.

Ah, I didn’t look at it that way. Thanks for clarifying.

If you’re also in favour of this, you could also make this new topic?

As I said, we’re trying to keep these feedback threads focused on a single ask.
