Search seemingly not working

Briefly describe (1-2 sentences) the Bug you’re experiencing:
Search doesn’t appear to be working as expected.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to the search oval up top
  2. Type in “South Africe” to get back 2 matches based on the task name. (This is also in a Country picklist, but I think the task name trumps any custom fields)
  3. I view the two tasks and in a *custom field called “Proposed Action>>>” there is a three-word string I want to search on
  4. I search on one, two, or all three of the words and I don’t get any matches.

Welcome to the Forum @anon59828738 and thank you for reaching out!

If I understood correctly, you are trying to run an Advanced Search to find the value of a Custom Field, correct?

To find a Custom Field value you just need to follow the steps showed in the screenshot I’m attaching below:

Please note that it is currently not possible to search for a Custom Field that is specific for a Project but only global Custom fields (that belongs to the Organization Library).

Can you please confirm if this is what you are experiencing?

Thank you Peter! Looking forward to your reply!

Hi and thanks for the initial reply.

I have verified that the fields I’m searching on are available to the SensusDx domain. They are not limited solely to this project.

I’m now seeing that if I use the Advanced Search option, that does retrieve the Tasks I was expecting to retrieve.

While I can appreciate the design and development decisions around how searching works (I’ve had these same discussions with software engineers on past teams), it really stinks when you force the user to have to do something extra when most users don’t think that way. Again, I appreciate the overhead of having multiple columns indexed and the overhead of searching, but your implementation puts the BURDEN on every team member to inherently know whether a fields is custom or not. We are a small team so I can do some training (and retraining), but I know with 100% certainty that I’m going to be getting calls, emails, and Skype messages complaining about not being able to find something. THAT’s the “Use Case” that needs to be embraced.

Please don’t view this as a rant. I hope it becomes useful input to the product team.

ASANA SEARCH engine is one of the WORST SEARCH engine, I ever used, in my life.
First of all, it does not support, special characters, wild cards, Capital Letters etc - A Great Limitation.
If I search for, say ‘Jan’, it will display apart from ‘Jan’, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec also
Everyday, I face the issue of ASANA SEARCH ENGINE, not being ROBUST, COMPREHENSIVE, RELIABLE like Google Search

Weird. I’ve found their search extremely robust. I’ve never searched for something I wasn’t able to find…

Hi @RAMA_MURTHY_P,

If you haven’t yet, I’d recommend upvoting the following thread from our #productfeedback category: Support quotes and wildcard in Search function - #25 by Hanss as well as other feature request related to the Asana search feature.

If you believe something is not working as expected, please forward to our support team the following info, we’ll be happy to take a look into this for you!

  • Screenshot of your query
  • Screenshot of results
  • URLs of any task missing from results that you would expect to see there
  • Any other relevant info

I’m closing out this thread for now, but don’t hesitate to create a new thread in #tipsandtricks if you need a hand with anything!

Thanks!
