I would like to create a rule that when you create subtasks that they will display all associated parent task titles in the thread regardless of collaborator status on the task or project. Much like one could see file data storage hierarchy on a computer. How it shows up doesn’t matter as much as it does. So, it could add it in the description, as a comment, an informational sub-header (ex: assignee or date), or even as a field. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Ex: Project: Maintaining Meat Suit > Lunch > Make PB&J > peanut butter > buy
Ex: Project: Maintaining Meat Suit > Lunch > Make PB&J > peanut butter > spread on one slide of bread
Ex: Project: Maintaining Meat Suit > Lunch > Make PB&J > jelly > buy or make? > jelly recipes
Ex: Project: Maintaining Meat Suit > Lunch > Make PB&J > jelly > buy or make? > favorite brands and flavors

This might be borderline possible in Asana (not sure), but even if it is found to be possible, I’d advise against it, because

  • Most views in Asana wouldn’t be able to display them readably or at all
  • There are native ways to show the context of subtasks
  • Nesting subtasks deeply may cause buggy behavior

Real world example:
Project: Onboarding John Smith
Task: Milestones
Subtask: One Year Anniversary

I am not a collaborator on the project. I can only see that my subtask says it’s someones anniversary and that it is a Milestone. Whose anniversary is this? Not a clue.

Are you literally being assigned “One Year Anniversary” as Task with no other info or context? That’s not even an action, it’s simply a noun phrase, so I’d say whoever put together that task structure and assigned you needs to do a much better job to indicate the specific action they want you to do.

If the implication is literally that you, as, say, the designated banner maker, must of course make a banner for the “One Year Anniversary” of John Smith, then you ought to have been given access to the whole project, or at least a parent task that provides enough context to make your assigned action meaningful, PLUS the assigned action “Make banner”.
