I have a portfolio with 4 projects. I would like to create an automation rule that updates the project status if one or more tasks are past due. Is this possible? If it is possible, at which level should I set up the rule? I imagine it should be done in each project, correct?
I don’t believe this is possible. But were you aware of the portfolio field/column that you can optionally turn on called Overdue tasks that you can turn on to quickly see (in red) if a project has any overdue tasks:

It would good to understand what use case you have to issue a status update every time a task is overdue.
if you are looking for visibility, then I would opt for what @lpb suggested. The view gives you a quick way to see what is overdue and quickly navigate to the respective project.
Asana doesn’t do portfolio level automation but you can keep track of overdue tasks by adding the overdue tasks column in your portfolio view.
Correction for others reading this thread: Asana does do portfolio-level automation for some months now.
And two posts prior, I already offered the same alternative with a screenshot of it.
Thanks,
Larry
I have seen a rule action, at the task level, allowing someone to trigger AI to draft a status update. So theoretically when that gets published, you’ll be able to draft an update, but not publish it automatically.
