- I am trying to remove sections (section grouping) from my timeline view AND either have no grouping, or group by another field;
- I am able to do this for list views, and I have searched for the same capability in timeline;
- It simply seems to be missing as an option, which completely limits the use of timeline view IF sections are always an imposed grouping.
Hi @James_Detar, welcome to the community!
You’re not missing anything. This is a known limitation in Timeline view.
In Asana, sections are always tied to the project structure in Timeline, so unlike List view, Timeline doesn’t currently support:
- removing section grouping completely, or
- switching grouping to another field (like a custom field or assignee)
Because of that, Timeline will always default to displaying tasks grouped by sections, even if you’d prefer a flat or differently grouped view.
A couple of common workarounds people use:
- Use a List view when you need flexible grouping (custom fields, assignee, etc.)
- Create a separate “Timeline-friendly” project layout with fewer or no sections (so it appears flatter in Timeline)
- Use Filter + Sort in List view alongside Timeline for planning flexibility
You’re right that it does limit flexibility in Timeline. It’s something many users run into when using it as a planning view rather than a section-based structure.

Hi @James_Detar , have you tried the Gantt view which has Grouping and Subgrouping capabilities? You may need to manually add the Gantt view to your project using the ‘+’ button on the right of your view tabs.
Stellar catch Richard!
I indeed missed the Gantt option and it does in fact group on my alternative custome fields, or not at all where that works best.
I will check out the pros/cons of the Gantt compared to the timeline, but on first blush the Gantt looks to provide what I need for now.
Thank you very much!
