Timeline : group by filter

Hello everyone,

I would like to group my tasks by my filter “outcome’” in the timeline view but I can’t find how to do it.
Is it possible ? If it’s not, why ? ^^

Hi @Pauline_Gautier , I’m assuming you mean in the Project Timeline view (not in a Portfolio Timeline view) and that your ‘outcome’ “filter” is a single-select field (not a number field).

Indeed, in Timeline view, it is not currently possible to group by but it definitely is in the Gantt view. You just need to add it to your project by clicking on the + at the end of your view tabs (List, Timeline, Dashboard, Files etc).

In the Gantt view you will see a ‘Group’ button in the top right area, where you should see your ‘outcome’ custom field in the list, instead of ‘Sections’ which is the default.

Indeed, it’s in the project Timeline view and yes the “outcome” filter is a single select field.
I saw it’s possible in the Gantt view but I need to use the Timeline view to see my roadmap and have a macro view.
Unfortunately, The Gantt view isn’t the answer.
I don’t understand why it is possible in all other views and not this one…

Regarding filter and group functions in List View, Timeline View, and Gantt View.

It’s a shame that these functions are not available in Timeline View at the moment.
I think the reason why they are not available is due to the drawing specifications of Timeline View compared to List View and Gantt View.

Gantt View also did not originally have a group function, but it was added later.

Asana is updated daily.
However, with so many features to update, it seems that priorities are determined with limited engineering resources.

For example, the filter function was a request from users in 2020, and was finally realized in 2024.

Hi @Pauline_Gautier , the Product Feedback threads (that @Ka_Nishiyama mentioned) always have a purple vote button in the top left corner - that is what will bump it up to the Asana product team!

I have also voted on both :slight_smile:

For what it’s worth, you can also zoom out in the Gantt view, to the same extent as the Timeline view, if that is what you mean.
