Remove template owner from projects created from template

As the template owner, I’d still like to be the only one able to edit the template itself, but I don’t need (or want) to be automatically added to the projects created from the template. My preference would be for folks to have to check a box when they create a project from template that adds the owner, or not even have the option and have to manually add the owner if they want that individual to have project access. As it stands, I get numerous inbox notifications for task activities on projects that others have created from a template I own. I’ve had to reach out to the project owners and request that they remove me from the project.

I was hoping to find a solution to this when I got on Asana Community but it seems this is still fairly new issue. :frowning: Our team has an intern help out with the templates and we would like to also avoid the intern getting notifications on all projects created from a template.

@Stephen_Patterson While I would contend that Asana’s template feature is the best and most comprehensive solution, my company Stratelyze solution is another alternative for both free and premium accounts Sendana Tools-Sendana Add- A Novel Way to Add and/or Transfer Projects and Tasks In Mass - #9 by James_Carl. I am inclined to believe that this may not have the same problem but I am not totally sure.

We are rolling out Asana to our company this next month and we are going to have so many templates. I would love to have a fix for this as I do not want to be added to every single project kicked off by a template. Does anyone have a good workaround for this?

To revive this thread - I’ve created custom templates for a large team, and it’s definitely a pain to be added to each project that they create from my templates- I’m having to frequently remind people to remove me from their project straight away (in case they add any sensitive information).
+1 to the above statement:

My preference would be for folks to have to check a box when they create a project from template that adds the owner, or not even have the option and have to manually add the owner if they want that individual to have project access.

This is a real aggravation. As the creator and owner of the template used by my team, I’m getting added automatically to all projects created using the template. As a result, I get a ton of notifications that I’ve been added to a project, which I have to just ignore. But that means I also end up ignored notifications where I was explicitly and deliberately added to a project and need to be aware of.

I came across this issue and this string, and even posted a comment asking for a fix for this problem, but then found something myself:

When you go to edit a project template, there’s an area called “Project membership” at the top. It appears that I can remove myself from this area, but still remain the “owner” (and thus admin) of the template.

Hoping this helps others!

Did this work for you? I’m still getting notifications from projects I have removed myself from.

in the hopes to find a solution for the above, I want to revive this thread - I still want to be the ‘project admin’ and ‘editor’ as the templates are used by a lot of different people so there is not really one single ‘project admin’ for each and not sure why I have to create a guest account as a workaround, there must be something else Asana can do to prevent this as this has been an issue since 2019.

@Vanessa_N,

I just tested this and even if no project members are specified in the template’s Share dialog, the template owner becomes a project member (I think that should be considered a bug), along with the person who actually asks to create the project from the template (ok).

The future project’s members list is maintained in the template’s Share dialog. What’s the rationale for this behavior if not a bug, or not showing the owner in that list as uneditable if that’s what’s happening. Confusing!

Thanks,

Larry

Hi @Andreina_Rejon and @lpb , I’m checking this with our Product team and will get back to you once I know more. Thank you!

Thanks! And I forgot to mention…I’m pretty sure it used to respect the Share list of members in the past, if I recall correctly.

Hi @Andreina_Rejon and @lpb, our Developers are having trouble replicating this on their end. I couldn’t replicate it either. The template owner is not added as a project member.

They are asking if you can share the ID of one of the templates that is adding the owner as a project collaborator. Would you be able to share this with me via DM, please? Thanks!

Well, I just tried to reproduce the problem and I can’t, and I believe it was the same way I attempted before.

So, no problem currently!

Perhaps it was a glitch, or a fix was made, or I’m fallible (well that’s certain generally, and perhaps in this case too)!

Thanks, @Vanessa_N,

Larry

Thanks for confirming, @lpb, and no worries! If you see this happening again, let me know and I can reach out to the Developers again

@Andreina_Rejon, are you still running into issues?
