Our use case is twofold: 1) PM that needs to track projects and have high-level visibility; 2) engineering team doing day-to-day work on those various projects (epics) needing a single source of truth. I would like to be able to have a timeline view of a whole portfolio to establish a quarterly roadmap. I would also like devs to be able to drill down to the card level, manage workload across projects/epics, and apply estimates & time remaining on each card (task). I think I’m close, but could someone more fluent in portfolios and dashboards point me in the right direction?
Additionally, I am wondering if it’s possible to have a Timeline view that comprises multiple projects. I tried the Portfolio timeline and that seems to just be based on the project due date, not driven by the tasks within each project of the Portfolio.

Hi,
You can consider creating a master project within Asana where all key tasks from various epics or projects are multi-homed. This way, you can maintain high-level visibility for project management while providing engineers a single source of truth across different projects/epics.
Hi @Kevmoore,
To effectively track quarterly goals, I recommend setting up KPIs and goals at the project level, then consolidating them into a master project. This master project will serve as a central hub, reflecting KPIs from all individual projects. By centralizing this information, you’ll have comprehensive visibility and can leverage dashboards to gain deeper insights across all projects. In this way PM will have better visibility and engineering team will be working on their own project
This makes sense - thanks! So a master project with all tasks rehomed will give better visibility and reporting options than, say, a PMO portfolio of all active projects?
This makes sense! When you say KPIs, are you meaning a custom field or a different feature set that I’m overlooking?
I’ve also used the “combo project” approach to accomplish this in the past, but this really seems like a major failing of the portfolio function within Asana. Being able to save and show different views (e.g. multiple varieties of the list view) would make this function a lot more useful.

Seems a minor workaround could be Milestones - each project milestone is visible in the Portfolio timeline view. Still not dynamic to the tasks, but perhaps could be workable. +++++++
