I’m delighted to announce that we just rolled out an update allowing you to right click on your project list tasks and take some actions! This custom right click menu is available in all project views (List, Board, Timeline and Calendar) and includes actions relevant to the view, state of the task and user (so you may not always find the same options for each task).
The other good news is that this feature is already available to all our customers, so if you haven’t yet, go check it out in your accounts and let us know what you think in the comments below!
We look forward to hearing your feedback and if you have any questions, please let us know, @Emily_Roman and I will be happy to help!
This is a GREAT addition that will make it easier and more convenient than ever to perform common actions on tasks.
It’s worth noting that Mac users who aren’t using a multi-button mouse can access this feature by control+clicking (mouse or trackpad) or using a two-finger click (trackpad).
On a side note, it would be great to have this same functionality on Asana for iOS/iPadOS via a long press on the task.
p.s. For those who would like a visual, here’s an example. As Marie noted, the content will include actions that are relevant to the view, state of the task, and user.
Awesome! What I like is the inclusion of the “Open in new tab” option. Very often app menus, which mask the browser menu, fail to cater for the critical options lost.
My other favorites are:
Copy task link - I used to have to open the task to get the link
Overall, I’m a big fan of this. I think it looks very nice, and it reduces some unnecessary clicks.
However, there is one thing I have a huge issue with, the “open in new tab” functionality isn’t very useful to me, as it counters what the standard right-click and “open link in new tab” should really be. I was really excited when I saw this was added, until I saw how it actually functions…
On the new menu, clicking just adds a new tab where you view the task in focus mode. Perhaps some people really wanted that, but for me what was very important was that right click open link in new tab opened a new tab that took me to that task within the project it belongs to. I need that extra information.
For example, let’s say I’m in my “My Tasks” and I have 10 tasks due today. First, I want to prioritize them. Then: I would right click on each task and open in new tab, because I want to see the due dates for the other tasks on the project, see other project data, etc. Doing that would allow me to have a tab to show me each of those projects so I can easily view the other tasks for that project’s workflow. Now: it just gives me a new tab with the task in focus mode. If I click on the “background” sides around the task pane (which would close the detail view and put me back to the project’s task list), it just takes me back to my tasks (or whatever location I last was when I selected the new tab option). I have no option to make it work how I used to, which throws off my workflow and slows me down significantly.
My ask is that the open link in new tab button (which looks great and I support being there) take me to the respective task within the project (functioning exactly how the standard right-click and “open link in new tab” used to) and not just a link to focus mode.
I’d love to see “Add to project” and “Add as a subtask” in this menu, as I use these very often, and even in the standard menu, i have to scroll to the bottom and additional options just to get to “Add as a subtask”…right click would mean a lot of productivity gain for me
I get what you’re saying (and agree), but the issue is that a task can belong to more than one project.
Workaround: It is an additional click unfortunately.
Once you’re on the new tab viewing the task in focus mode, look for “Projects” below Assignee and Due Date.
Click the desired project.
This will open the view you’re used to.
For prioritizing the way you like, it sounds as though you’d want tabs for each of your projects with a task due today.
Quick tip: You can ctrl/command + click on projects from the left menu (your favorites or within teams) to open each one in a new tab.
I LOVE that you can duplicate tasks from this right click menu. I’d like to be able to duplicate more than one as it pulls over all of the information needed vs just copying the main text. Thanks!
