I was guiding some newbies through My Tasks setup, and we realized that the standard date-promotion rules I have been using for years say “runs on tasks”. My new folks were worried that their assigned subtasks wouldn’t be promoted! I assured them that this was not the case, and indeed tested just to double-check, and the rules do work on subtasks that are assigned to me. Can anyone explain why the rule says this?

You’re correct to note that it’s confusing!
In this context, “Runs on tasks” means “Runs on top-level tasks here,” where “top-level tasks here” means 1) for My Tasks that the task/subtask is assigned to me, or 2) for a project that the task/subtask is a member of the project.
Hope that helps!
