It looks like the web version of the My Tasks view has had an update in the last day or so.
I use this view constantly throughout the day on the web app, and I’ve noticed a new expandable arrow on the left side of tasks for “Expand subtasks.” On its own, I can see how this could be useful.
The issue is with dragging and reordering tasks manually.
Now, whenever I drag a task upward past another task that contains subtasks, the task automatically expands. If I drag past multiple parent tasks, they all expand as I move through the list.
Occasionally, the task I’m dragging even ends up becoming a subtask of the expanded task by mistake.
This creates a few problems:
It makes the task list look cluttered and messy
I constantly have to manually collapse tasks I never intended to open
It interrupts and slows down my normal workflow
Could we either:
Have an option to disable the new “Expand subtasks” behaviour entirely, or
Change the drag-and-drop behaviour so tasks do not auto-expand while dragging past them?
My gut feeling: I don’t think Asana will revert that only for My Tasks or add an option to disable it. Seems like the official way now. But I am moving your post to Product Feedback, make sure to vote
No, I’m not spending too long there at all. I move the mouse up and down, and they just open all the time.
The mouse is actually on the fastest setting, and I try and push through tasks as quickly as possible, so it’s definitely not a case of hanging around or being too slow.
@Jimmyss, I’m experiencing the same thing and was just searching how to make it stop. It’s very frustrating and wasting time having to fix the tasks that expanded each time. I’m hoping something is done to address this issue soon.
I would also like a setting to disable this. I understand it may be useful for some, but I’m having the same issue and it’s wasting a lot of time to have to un-expand tasks. And since I work in the My Tasks view, I’m not able to use the feature to collapse all sub-tasks with one click (but even if that were working, I still do not want to have to constantly collapse tasks - I am continually moving my tasks around every day).
Given three separate reports, could you escalate this?
Now this is happening to me too. Sometimes, sometimes not. And sometimes it re-collapses tasks it expands, and sometimes not. It’s not operating predictably/consistently as far as I can tell.
This is happening to me as well. I start my day by dragging and dropping my tasks in order of priority and this is making it much more difficult and frustrating, not to mention I am worried I will drag an important tasks into a subtask position and miss doing it.
Found this post looking for a solution to the same problem. Just starting recently, the subtasks all expand while dragging a task past it without my staying still over a task. It’s almost like the hover delay for expanding isn’t working and they’re expanding immediately. I’m likewise worried I’ll accidentally drag a task into a subtask while organizing my list.
Hi everyone, and thanks @lpb for flagging this to us.
I’ve read through the reports here and I can see the impact this is having. Having parent tasks auto-expand while you drag to reorder, sometimes with no apparent delay and not always consistently, makes a daily workflow like prioritizing your My Tasks list slower and more error-prone. The concern several of you raised about accidentally dropping a task into a subtask position is one we take seriously.
We’re looking into it now. I’ve shared the details from this thread with our product team to determine what’s happening with the drag-and-drop and auto-expand behavior, and we’ll follow up here as soon as we have more to share.
In the meantime, if you’re able to add anything that helps us reproduce it, and whether it happens every time or intermittently, that’s genuinely useful. Thank you for the detail so far.
This is happening to me recently too. It’s really unbearable. When scrolling down, any task with subtasks automatically expands, meaning you have to continue scrolling down for ages if you have lists as long as me , and often you end up inadvertently dropping the task you’re moving into another task’s subtasks.
Having to find them and move them back, and constantly un-expanding tasks, is so time consuming, it makes it impossible to use Asana like I used to. Will you be reverting to the old way format soon please? I love being able to click on a task and seeing all the subtasks neatly on the right hand side in a separate window. It’s what makes Asana great. Expanding them without any control, and expanding them in the main task list, is messy, makes workflow extremely difficult, and causes accidental mistakes.
