Make custom fields searchable

Where is this at Asana? How hard is it to add this feature request?

Just about all our users have brought up this question to me: why aren’t custom field values searchable? With just about everything else on the platform indexed, it’s a bit of a facepalm that custom field values are not.

Could not agree more. After hours of making custom fields, just to realize they are not easily searchable for my team. Time for a new work around headache for resolution. “In the title” of task. This feature requests would be more than beneficial. Basic search at the least. Being able to lock the custom field wanting to be common search for teams. Instead of advanced search what needs to be searched.

I would also like Custom Fields to be searchable!

We still need a way of adding custom fields to advanced searches as “or” arguments rather than “and” arguments. To that end, we need way better abilities here, as there are times when I need to search for 2 or 3 parameters in a custom field that may have 10 parameters. One way to accomplish this would be to allow instances of custom fields. Mean if I have Custom Field-A and it has 10 parameters in it, but I only want to search for 3 items from it. I could load custom field-A 3 times, and set each one to the parameter I’m looking for… again, this only works if the logic is set to “OR.”

I used to use Tags to indicate the academic subject related to a task (e.g., MATH, SCI, ELA). I had about 15 subjects. I had a saved search to return all tasks that had a tag for ELA, (or) MATH, (or) SCI, (or) SOC.

When custom fields came out, I was sooooo happy. I added a “Subject” field to my project, assigned a Subject to the tasks, and deleted all the tags from the tasks.

Woe is me. In Advanced Search, I cannot pull only those tasks with ELA, (or) MATH, (or) SCI, (or) SOC.

I’m stuck exporting all subjects and using EXCEL to filter out what I don’t need.

Thpppt.

This is still an issue.

I am having this same issue when the custom field IS global and not specific to a project. Same use case as well, I added a custom ID field and want to be able to search it in the global search at the top of the page. The only way I can search is to create a custom search. The purpose is to be able to find the task quickly without having to remember the name. This kind of defeats the use of the custom field.

We have many fields that contain a lot of entries and it is quite laborious having to go through one by one to find the appropriate entry. If we click on a keyboard character, then the list is located in the first entry that finds that character as the first letter, but this type of positioning does not really serve our purpose. Being able to search the drop down field would be great and a significant time saver.

Any status on this product feature? I see that it was requested a while ago and I would love to see it added to the product roadmap. Like all users here, we have long lists and it would be ideal to search and smart typing selections. Just like the search intros forum!

I am interested in being able to search within custom fields for tasks. I know it is possible but it is awkward to drill down and search for a specific custom field and then put in the keyword. Is it possible to enable searching of all custom fields in addition to task names, descriptions, and messages?

Hi @Jeremy_Levy, thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback!

When running an Advanced Search, you can search a keyword and add a filter for a custom field as seen in my screenshot below. Is this what you were hoping to achieve? If not, could you please provide some more detail?

Looking forward to hearing back from you

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for your response. I think I am looking for search option that will search all custom fields, not just one that I manually type. We are using asana (in part) as an inventory system (called “AoT” or Asana of Things), and we want to search custom fields like “Barcode”, “Manufacturer”, “keywords” etc whose values are not in the task name or description. I like to have “Search” succeed without having to dive into the Advanced menu. I guess I was hoping that “All” would include not only tasks but their custom field values. Maybe this just a feature request….

Thanks again,

Jeremy

Still does not work. Attached screenshots. The custom field is added into my organization library…

but in reality there much more tasks as shown below:

Seems The “contain the word” doesn’t work if there is no separation (space or dash) in the text

Hello, disappointed to see this is not a feature. Monday.com does this very easily.
It would be great to know if this is being considered and if it will be possible ever.

Also, it would be great to search “Single select” in the Asana Forms. For example, if we have a list of projects to select (40+), you need to scroll them all to find and choose the one you need. It would be helpful to have a search field in the beginning
