I've never been able to export any project to CSV

Seems like a critical misfire. The email never comes. It should be offered as an instant download from your browser.

Also, the CSV export window is so bare bones and anti-UX.

It is when the project is small, yours is probably pretty big. I did one again yesterday and it worked, took a while. You should probably contact support, but before, check your spam folder

Just FYI, Asana2Go (disclaimer: I’m the creator) offers some csv capabilities too.
