Issue when Running Rule with recurring task

I have a task that has a yearly recurring due date. I setup a rule to move a completed task to my completed category. When I did this the task that gets created for the next year gets moved (not marked completed) to the completed column as well

Hi @Keith_Schuster and thanks for creating this separate thread. We received a couple of similar reports over the last few days and our Team is looking into what they can do to fix this. I don’t have yet an ETA for resolution, but I’m following this task and will make sure to keep you posted as soon as I have an update! Thanks again for taking the time to report this in the Forum!

Briefly describe (1-2 sentences) the Bug you’re experiencing:

I use the default automation to move completed tasks to a new column. The task I’m moving is a recurring task. I appears Asana copies the completed task to create the new task automatically for recurrence. The issue is that the automation action happens first. So, when I complete a recurring task in Column1, that completed task gets moved to Column2, then the new task gets created in Column2 when I should be created on Column1.

Steps to reproduce:
Create a recurring tasks.
Set the automation to move it form one board column to another on completion.
Complete the task and see where the new task is created.

Thanks for the report @Bob_Carver!

This is something our team is aware of! I’ve merged your post with the existing thread we have on this topic, I’ll make sure to keep you posted via this thread as soon as I have an update on my end!

I use a set of cards that repeat daily manage my team’s regular tasks. I activated the rules function yesterday – a feature I had just learned about. The rule triggers the cards to move to a “Completed” column after being checked off, then at the end of the month I was planning to move the column to an archive board. The purpose of all this is to keep a record of who completed tasks from day to day and which tasks where not done in case we ever need to look back at our records. Well, now my cards are repeating in the “Completed” column instead of the “Daily Tasks” column where I would like them to be. Is there any way to ensure that Repeat feature happens before the rule trigger? I am a premium user.

Indeed the duplication happens after you completed and after the rules moved the task. You currently can’t choose that order…

Welcome to the Forum @Suzanne_Stone  and thank you for reaching out!

What you are saying is correct. Other users have reported this issue and our Team is currently working to find a fix for it. If it’s Ok with you, I’m merging your post with the thread we have regarding this topic and I’ll make sure to keep you posted in this thread as soon as I get and update from the Team!

Have a great week Suzanne!

It’s been a reported bug since rules were released

Try creating a second rule:

Trigger = New date is set →
Action = Move task to a certain column/section.

When you complete a recurring task, the task is duplicated and a new date is set.

@Natalia - you mentioned another thread, can you provide the link here please.

I think @Nate_Stell suggestion of another rule is a good one, but i don’t want to pay for a higher subscription just to set one rule, could asana look at allowing up to,say, 5 custom rules on the lower subscription, that way users can achieve the result they need rather than a one size fits all solution

Is there any update to a fix for this issue?
