Indicator for Sub-Tasks

I also support this idea.

Maybe small thumbnails of the pictures added in a subtask could somehow be visible in the main task also…

A clear visual clue is really important. Other than the task creator, almost everyone else misses that there are sub-tasks.

A number of mechanisms could be followed, there are good suggestions here. But whatever it is, can we have this fast. A prominent + would be simple as an immediate fix instead of the almost hidden grey speech icon.

Yes, somehow I find Asana quite lacking in these kind of visual clues. Its horrible to need to click on a task to discover there’s something inside.

Is there any work arounds that anyone has found for Subtasks? I keep loosing them… I would love it if we would be able to have some sort of dual column/list view that we could switch between?

Maybe even have the option to isolate a single column in a board and switch it to a ā€˜list’ view with each box being a ā€œheadingā€ of sorts?

If you find yourself losing track of subtasks, you may want to multihome them into the parent project. Just use keyboard shortcut Tab+P to add a subtask to a project, then type in and select the parent project you’re working from.

I guess if I ā€˜multi-home’ them then it’s not a subtask anymore? I was using subtasks to organize thoughts and processes but I guess that’s not what Asana is built to do?

Yeah, I was about to signup for a paid account (switching over from Teamwork) until I realized that you can’t really see when a task has sub-task. I’m a designer with a keen eye, and I only now noticed a small light grey arrow indicating sub-tasks. Seriously? Why even have it, you can’t see it! There is no way programmers on my team will see this, and sub-tasks will totally get skipped over given the parent task can still be checked off.

Can you make this dark grey, or colored. Something more visual please! And a speech bubble to indicate comments would also be really important.

In Teamwork, all tasks with new comments have a tiny green speech bubble, once viewed it disappears. And parent tasks can’t get checked off till the sub-tasks are checked off.

Please tell me this will be address soon as I’d love to use asana… but this is pretty basic but really an important requirement.

This is so important and coming up on a few different threads - we need more advanced functionality for managing tasks/subtasks within a project.

+1
And a indicator for the lower subtasks aswell.
Something like that:

I use an arrow and also created a ā€œSub-task >>ā€ tag (colored) that helps me for now. But it would be awesome to have an automatic tag of some sort.

Need that indicator for each level of sub-tasks to sub-sub-tasks.

Grey if no updates to that sub since last visited, colored if there is.

This would be wonderful, the current implementation is too subtle. I manage several contractors who don’t work in Asana all the time and it’s the number one thing they complain about, not knowing there sub-tasks that they needed to look at.

I agree. An indication for a filled ā€œdescriptionā€ field (besides another one for subtasks) would be extremely helpful! Here’s s feature request for this you should all vote for! Feature Request: Add indication of SubTasks or Description

It would be great if tasks in the calendar items, the list view items, and subtasks themselves displayed an indicator of how many subtasks it contains (as well as a fraction for how many of those subtasks were complete).

Calendar example:
32-AM

Subtask example:

Thank you so much for sharing this idea @Jonny_MacEachern! I’m just merging your post with Indicator for Sub-Tasks - #34 by Cyrill to consolidate all feedback in this regard!

YES! I completely agree with this suggestion. It would be helpful in a project manager role when reviewing a project’s task lists to see how many subtasks exist AND how many are completed. It would also be helpful when viewing my own task list to personally see how many subtasks live in a given task and how many have yet to be completed. It really enhances the ā€œat a glanceā€ view of a project’s status, a task list’s depth, and what are otherwise often hidden complexities within a task unless you know to click into it.

Has there been any decision or progress made on the Sub-Task indicator?
We are currently evaluating Asana to use for our company, but there needs to be an indicator on the Cards the tells you there are sub tasks. I’m shocked this isn’t already added.

Shouldn’t this be merged with ā€œIdeas/Feedback to display subtasksā€ @Marie? These two requests are very similar and could be completed at the same time. The votes of both these ideas would make subtasks the top issue on this forum.

I agree that there is no way to see when subtasks exist, other than an advanced search. I have to click on each task to see which ones might, by chance, have a subtask just to find out this information. That is time-consuming and counter-productive.

Subtasks are a helpful feature, but I think Asana is lagging behind other tools by not giving users a way to really leverage subtasks. I try to avoid using them at all because the way they are (or are not) displayed is not intuitive for my team.

Many helpful suggestions have been made under the other idea that would address this issue.

Hi @Mary_Wood and thanks for the mention! I considered merging these threads, however since votes don’t carry over with merges I though the two threads with their respective 213 and 123 votes would be stronger separate rather than merged!
