How to quickly import Todoist project CSV exports into Asana project CSV files?

Hi! Is there an easy or automated way to convert Todoist project CSV exports to CSVs that can be imported into Asana?

I have tried converting manually using the todoist export files and the Asana template & “prepare data for CSV import” page. But for the number of projects I have, this is going to be SO PAINFUL to do manually.

The Todoist CSV exports have a different structure than Asana needs. E.g., sections are ROWS not a column; sub-tasks rows are numbered to show their indent level, rather than having a column identifying the parent task.

Does anyone have a macro that can do this? OR any other automations or tips? Thank you!

Hi @Abigail_Wiebe Welcome to the community!

This is a very real pain point. Asana’s CSV importer expects clean columns like task name, due date, assignee, description, section, dependencies, and custom fields, so Todoist exports usually need a transformation step first. For a small number of projects, Power Query or a spreadsheet macro could work. For lots of projects, I’d look at scripting/API-based migration instead — Asana migration guidance treats CSV import as better for smaller project counts, while technical scripting is more scalable and allows more precise mapping.

Practical options I’d look at:

  1. Power Query / Excel macro to convert section rows into a “Section” column and convert indent levels into a “Parent task” column.
  2. Google Apps Script or Python if you need to batch-process many Todoist project exports.
  3. Asana API / scripted migration if preserving hierarchy across many projects is important.
  4. Professional Services or a migration partner if this is business-critical and there are many projects to move.
