How to keep multiple tasks from being selected

This seems to be new (perhaps within the past month or so), and I’m not sure if it is a new feature that I need a tip on how to navigate, or if it is a glitch/bug.

When I have a parent task expanded to where all the subtasks can be seen on the left, and when those subtasks have already been added to the project, I am no longer able to consistently select one added subtask at a time. Multiple added subtasks keep getting selected even though I’m only clicking on one of them. And they appear to be selected quite randomly — certainly intentionally by me.

Additionally, when I click on a subtask on the left while viewing from inside of the parent task, the selection jumps me away to whatever section that subtask lives in (even though I absolutely do NOT want to go to another section) and as a result, when I do want to multi-select subtasks, now I can’t even do it because my view has been whisked away to some other location in the project rather than maintaining my current view. Both of these new functions are causing a great deal of trouble for our team and I’m hoping it is something I can turn off.

Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so, have you figured out the algorithm for which other subtask gets caught up in the selection? I feel either it is very purposeful and I’m not understanding the purpose, OR it’s a bug.

Here is a screen share of the action I’m seeing. Keep in mind, this is happening with only the single clicking of my mouse, no additional keys are being held down on my keyboard:

Any insight into tips on this possible new functionality would be helpful, because without knowing why or which other subtask is possibly going to get picked up, I’m having a lot of trouble navigating around in all of our projects right now.

Thanks!
