How to filter by a field with no value

Hey Asana, I’ve got my product backlog set up with a range of custom fields to allow us to assess things like:

  • stage of idea
  • what objective it aligns to
  • when it should be done, etc.

Of course tasks hit that board without the fields filled in, so to enable me to triage those, I want to filter by ‘field is BLANK’, however, there’s no apparent option? I can sort by field, sure, but then I still have the headache of scrolling and the task ‘jumping’ in the list.

Is there a workaround for the moment?

Hi @Martin_Parzonka, thanks for reaching out!

You can use our advanced search feature to create a report of tasks with no value for a specific field. You can also save your search as a report and you can always access it from the sidebar.

Please find more details in this article of our Asana guide:

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions

Have a great weekend!

Hi! Is this function still active? I’m having trouble seeing how it would be done with current custom fields setup.

I’d actually like to do this not as a search, but as a FILTER in a board. Is that possible? It doesn’t seem like it, but would be great.

I need this too. Any update on this? This seems like a very simple thing to include a [BLANK] option in each filter list. I am trying to filter a Portfolio view though so slightly different use case.

Alternatively adding the ability to do ‘is not’ on the Filter would allow me to achieve this as well.

@Justin_Roberts,

I recommend you create a new topic in English Forum > Product Feedback specifically about filtering in portfolios.

You can do this now in projects as below, but not (yet) in portfolios:

Thanks,

Larry
