Formula for calculating estimated time?

We have just upgraded to Asana Advanced (yeah!!) and I am now working on adding time tracking so that I can more effectivey use the Workload feature in my portfolios.

We have a task template for content productions, with several tasks for various team members. We have a custom field called Selects (#) and we know that for each task there is a ratio of time to # of selects. I’d like to set up my task template so that the tasks calculate an estimated time based on 1min x the # of selects, but can’t seem to enter a formula into the estimated time field - only an actual amount of time.

If I create a custom field and enter my formula there, how can I get the Workload estimated time to include that number since it’s now in a custom field vs. in the “estimate time” field created by Asana?

Hi @Victoria_de_Martigny , welcome to the Advanced plan :muscle:

In your Workload, you can change the effort, in the top right area, instead of Task count or Estimated time to any number field as well as formula fields. Just search your library for the formula field that you created and added to your library (and added to all your projects) in your Portfolio’s Workload.

Thanks Richard!

So for other projects in the portfolio that don’t require a calculation, I’d still need to include my new formula field and the formula would just be 1x “estimated time”, so that I consistently have all the estimated times in the same place. Is that the most efficient way to manage that?

That’s right. And you can easily add that field to all your projects when you set this as your effort in the Workload. Asana will check all the projects in your portfolio and prompt you to add your formula field to projects that done have it. This is a great way to quickly add it instead of going into each project one by one to add it.

Brilliant! Thanks for the tip! I feel like a kid in a candy store with all these new features.
